What Cardiff’s quarter-final appearance was worth

The percentages apply to net proceeds, not the headline value of tickets sold. The rules provide for specified match expenses to be deducted in calculating net receipts; visitor travel and hotel costs can be among expenses claimed. Consequently, the amount Cardiff received depended on actual receipts and eligible costs. Without the gate statement and expense figures, the 45% rule cannot be converted into a reliable cash total.
Was there also a TV payment?
BBC Sport’s 25 August 2026 explainer says facility fees for EFL Cup matches shown on Sky Sports’ main channel start at £75,000 and increase with progress in the competition. That is a general reported starting figure, not confirmation that Cardiff received £75,000—or any particular sum—for this fixture. The EFL listed the match on Sky Sports Football, but the available sources do not establish the applicable fee or how it was allocated. BBC Sport’s explainer provides context, not Cardiff’s payment record.

Prize money is different from match income
BBC Sport’s 2026 explainer says specific EFL Cup prize money begins at the semi-final stage, with £100,000 for the winners. That figure concerns winning the competition, not simply appearing in the quarter-final; it should not be counted as Cardiff’s income from the Chelsea tie. The same BBC article cites £110 million per season in total competition value, including around £70 million in central payments to EFL clubs. Those are broad competition-wide figures, not a quarter-final payment to Cardiff.
