The £5 million figure reported in 2019 was for Kevin McCabe’s 50% stake in Sheffield United, not a verified sale price for the entire club and its associated property. The High Court ordered McCabe to sell his stake to co-owner Prince Abdullah after a contractual dispute. Sheffield Wednesday’s separate takeover is no longer pending: it was completed in 2026, but the administrators’ completion notice did not disclose a purchase price.
What did the £5 million Sheffield United figure cover?
It covered Kevin McCabe’s half-share in Sheffield United. BBC reported on 16 September 2019 that the High Court ruled McCabe must sell his stake to Prince Abdullah for £5 million; the two men were equal owners. BBC’s report of the ruling therefore supports a price for McCabe’s 50% interest, not a confirmed price for 100% of the club.
The distinction matters because the court outcome also required Abdullah’s company to buy club property assets, including Bramall Lane, the academy and the hotel. BBC’s account of the following day explained that McCabe had sought to buy Abdullah’s 50% share for £5 million, while the original sale terms gave Abdullah’s company an option to buy McCabe’s holding at the same price. The BBC account of the contractual dispute and the High Court judgment provide the context for the transaction.
So the careful answer to “How much was Sheffield United sold for?” is: £5 million was reported for McCabe’s 50% stake under the 2019 court ruling. It should not be presented as the established price for the whole club plus its property.

What happened with Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover?
The title’s description of Wednesday seeking a takeover from Dejphon Chansiri is out of date. The club entered administration, and the administrators announced on 10 March 2026 that Arise Capital Partners LLC had been selected as preferred bidder after an earlier preferred bidder withdrew. The administrators’ announcement named Arise as the preferred bidder.
The administrators later confirmed that the sale was completed to Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin. The completion notice from BTG identifies the buyer but does not state the purchase price. The EFL confirmed the club was under new ownership on 2 May 2026, and BBC described the takeover as ending Chansiri’s ownership after more than six months in administration. Can the two takeover figures be compared?
Not as equivalent prices. Sheffield United’s £5 million figure relates to a particular 50% shareholding in a 2019 court-ordered transaction, alongside separate property-asset requirements. Sheffield Wednesday’s 2026 completion notice names the buyer but does not disclose the sale price. Without a stated Wednesday price and matching definitions of what each transaction included, a direct price comparison would be misleading.
