Southampton’s departure scenario has happened: Will Smallbone left when his contract expired at the end of the 2025/26 season, then joined Leicester City on a three-year deal. The club has not disclosed his wage or how his Millwall loan wages were split, so Southampton’s saving cannot be verified. A third-party estimate put his pay at £25,000 a week, but that is not confirmed club payroll data.
What happened to Will Smallbone’s Southampton contract?
Southampton announced on 12 June 2026 that Smallbone would leave when his contract expired at the end of the 2025/26 season. The club called him an Academy graduate, an 18-year member of the club and a player with 90 appearances for the first team. Southampton’s retained-list announcement described his departure as ending that association.

His previous deal was a three-year contract announced in August 2023 and due to run until 2026. Southampton’s contract announcement confirms the term.
Smallbone spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Millwall. Southampton announced the season-long move on 1 September 2025, but did not say which club paid what share of his wages. The loan announcement contains no wage terms. RTÉ reported on 1 October 2026 that Smallbone had left Southampton as a free agent and joined Leicester City on a three-year deal. RTÉ’s report describes the completed move.

Is there a confirmed figure for Southampton’s wage saving?
No. Southampton has not published Smallbone’s salary or the Millwall loan wage split. Without those figures, it is not possible to calculate Southampton’s actual saving from his departure, including what it paid during the loan.
The departure ended Southampton’s contractual wage obligation when the deal expired; it was not a transfer sale, and no transfer fee is established by the cited reporting. The club’s net payroll change also cannot be determined from the public information because it would depend on any replacement player and other costs.

What does the £25,000-a-week estimate mean?
An August 2025 Southampton salary list from Interesting Football gives Smallbone’s wage as £25,000 a week. That list is a third-party estimate, not an official Southampton figure. Capology says its salary data consists of estimates, and Smallbone’s profile does not expose a usable wage figure. Capology’s profile therefore does not independently verify the £25,000 figure.
If the estimate were accurate, multiplying it by 52 weeks gives £1.3 million for a full year. That is illustrative arithmetic, not a confirmed annual salary or Southampton saving. It should not be applied to the 2025/26 season: Smallbone was on loan at Millwall and the wage split was not disclosed.

Could Southampton have paid some of his wages at Millwall?
The available club announcement confirms the season-long loan but does not identify how the wages were allocated between Southampton and Millwall. It is therefore not established whether Southampton paid all, some or none of his wages during the loan. Any claim about the amount Southampton saved in 2025/26 would be speculative.
