Match the request to what the person knows, explain why you thought of them, and make it easy to say no.
Choose the kind of help you actually need
“Can you help me find a job?” leaves the other person to guess what would be useful. Decide whether you want perspective, a lead, an introduction, or a referral for a specific opening. These are different requests, and the right one depends on both your goal and the contact’s knowledge.
| Ask | Best when | What you are requesting |
|---|---|---|
| Advice conversation | You want to understand a field, employer, or career path, and the person may have useful experience but may not know your work well. | A short, focused conversation—not a job offer or referral. UW Bothell describes this as an information request and suggests asking for a bounded conversation: career-conversation guidance. |
| Lead or introduction | The person may know someone or an organization connected to the kind of opportunity you want. | A possible name, direction, or introduction, without assuming they will arrange one. The University of Victoria offers guidance on making a specific request for a contact at an organization: work-search tips. |
| Referral | You have identified a particular opening, and the contact can make an informed judgment about your fit and whether they are comfortable recommending you. | Whether they would consider referring you under the employer’s process—not a guarantee of an interview or job. UC Berkeley explains how to approach a referral request: asking for a job referral. |
There is no universal rule that you must start with advice before asking about a referral. Choose the request that fits the circumstances. A specific opening and a contact who knows your work can make a direct referral question reasonable; when either is missing, asking for insight or a lead may be more appropriate.
Decide whom to ask and what to share
Being close to someone does not mean they have relevant connections, can assess your work, or are able to refer you. Think about what that person plausibly knows: their industry, employer, career path, or network. The University of Manchester advises keeping initial requests small and notes that close contacts can be approached informally: communicating with your network.

Give enough context for the person to see how they might help. State the kind of role or field you are pursuing, mention the particular experience or connection that led you to contact them, and make one request. Avoid a vague “let me know if you hear of anything”; the University of Victoria recommends being concrete about the work you seek.
Write a clear, low-pressure message
Use your usual way of communicating with the person—text, email, or a call—and adjust the formality to the relationship. Keep the first message brief. These examples are starting points, not scripts you need to use word for word.
For advice or a short career conversation
“Hi [Name], I’m exploring [role/field] opportunities, and I thought of you because of your experience with [specific connection]. Would you have about 20 minutes for a call sometime in the next couple of weeks? I’d value your advice on [one specific question]. No worries if your schedule is full.”

For a referral to a specific opening
“Hi [Name], I saw the [job title] opening at [company]. My experience in [relevant skill or work] seems connected to [job requirement]. Do you know how referrals work there? If you feel you know my work well enough and think I may be a fit, would you be comfortable considering a referral? I can send the posting and my resume. No pressure if you’d rather not.”
Before asking, read the job posting and check how the employer’s referral process works, if that information is available. Share the posting and the qualifications most relevant to it. A referral is someone’s choice to support or pass along your application; UC Berkeley Career Engagement captures the distinction this way: “A helpful way to think about this is: asking for a referral is like asking for directions, not a ride.”

Handle the answer without adding pressure
If they agree
Thank them and ask what they need from you and what the next step should be. Send only the materials they request, such as your resume and the job posting. Follow the employer’s process and the contact’s preferences rather than assuming they will submit anything automatically.

If they decline or do not respond
Accept a no graciously; the person may be constrained by company policy, timing, or limited familiarity with your work. Do not bargain, repeatedly nudge them, or ask them to vouch for work they cannot assess. If the conversation feels open to it, you can ask for candid advice instead:
“Of course—I understand. Thanks for being honest and for taking the time to talk. If you have any advice on how I could strengthen my application, I’d be glad to hear it, but no pressure.”
If there is no reply, leave room for the possibility that they are busy or unable to help. One brief follow-up may be reasonable when you have a practical reason to check in; avoid treating silence as an obligation to keep asking.

Thank them and keep the relationship genuine
After a useful conversation, send a short thank-you that refers to something specific you learned and, if relevant, what you plan to do next. UC Berkeley recommends thanking the contact within one to two days; UT Dallas likewise suggests mentioning a specific point from the conversation in a follow-up: networking guidance.
For example: “Thanks again for making time to speak with me. Your point about [specific detail] helped me understand [what changed or next step]. I’ll [next step]. I appreciate your advice.” Thank them for the time and guidance whether or not the conversation leads to an introduction or application.
