Lasting customer relationships come from consistently delivering what you promised, communicating clearly, handling problems with care, and using customer information respectfully. These habits can support repeat business and trust, but no single tactic guarantees loyalty.
Why the everyday experience matters
A relationship is built through the product or service a customer receives and the effort it takes to buy, get help, or resolve an issue. In PwC’s 2025 U.S. Customer Experience Survey, 52% of 5,511 consumers said they had stopped using or buying from a brand because of a bad product or service experience; 29% said they had stopped because of poor customer experience online or in person. These survey responses show why both delivery and the surrounding journey deserve attention, not that any one practice guarantees retention. PwC’s survey findings were published September 29, 2025.
Six strategies for stronger customer relationships
1. Keep the promise
Set accurate expectations about what customers will receive, how much it will cost, when it will happen, and what support is available. Then compare those expectations with actual delivery. If a deadline or feature changes, explain the change promptly rather than letting the customer discover it after the fact.
2. Communicate with purpose
Make each message timely, understandable, and useful. Tell customers what has changed, what they need to do, and where to get help. Offer a route to a person when a situation requires judgment. More messages do not automatically mean a better relationship; unnecessary outreach can become friction.

3. Resolve problems with empathy and follow-through
When something goes wrong, acknowledge the customer’s problem, explain the next step and expected timing, and follow up until the issue is closed. Review recurring complaints and repeat contacts to find causes that can be fixed across the business, not just in one case. These are practical service principles; the surveys cited here do not quantify the effect of a particular recovery script.
4. Personalize only when it helps
Use information a customer has knowingly provided to make an interaction more relevant or reduce effort. Explain the benefit, respect stated preferences, and make it easy to correct information or limit personalization. Avoid assuming that more targeting, data collection, or messages are inherently better.

Gartner’s 2025 survey of 1,464 B2B buyers and consumers in North America, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand found that 53% of respondents had negative experiences with personalized marketing. That group was 3.2 times more likely to regret a purchase and 44% less likely to purchase again. Gartner also reported that customers experiencing personalization in a recent purchase journey were 1.8 times more likely to pay a premium and 2 times more likely to feel overwhelmed by information. These are reported survey associations, not universal causal effects; they underline the need to weigh usefulness against pressure and information overload. Fieldwork took place in November and December 2024. Gartner’s findings were published June 3, 2025.
5. Coordinate customer context across the team
When customers interact with multiple employees or channels, keep relevant history and next steps accessible to the people who need them. A customer should not have to repeatedly explain the same issue simply because the business failed to share context.

A customer relationship management (CRM) platform can help organize interaction history, follow-ups, and permissions, but it supports a process rather than creating one. Choose a system based on workflow fit, integrations, access controls, usability, reporting, data practices, and the effort required to keep records current. Deloitte Digital reported that 62% of surveyed U.S. B2C brands had deployed CRM platforms to strengthen customer understanding and outreach. That is evidence of adoption, not proof that a CRM automatically improves loyalty. In the same research, consumers said 43% of experiences felt personalized, while brands reported personalizing 61% of experiences—an important gap between what businesses believe they deliver and what customers perceive. The research sampled 1,000 U.S. adult consumers and 500 U.S. B2C executives in January and February 2024. Deloitte Digital’s report was published in January 2025.
6. Listen, measure, and adapt
Ask for feedback at useful points, then look for patterns rather than treating every response as an isolated score. Review recurring complaints, customer effort, response and resolution patterns, and retention measures in the context of your business. Compare what the organization thinks it provides with what customers say they experience, and change the journey where evidence identifies friction.

Earn trust while using customer information
Customer context is useful only if handled responsibly. Explain what information you collect and why, limit access to people who need it, and respect choices about communication and personalization. In PwC’s 2025 U.S. survey, 93% of consumers said a brand would lose their trust if it mishandled their personal information. This is a reported survey response, not a prediction that every respondent will behave identically, but it makes privacy part of the customer experience rather than a back-office concern.
Twilio’s 2025 State of Customer Engagement findings reported that 45% of consumers felt understood by brands, while 71% said they would walk away from purchases if the experience did not feel relevant. These are Twilio survey findings, not population-wide certainties. They point to a practical balance: understand customers well enough to be useful, but give them control over how that understanding is used. Twilio’s 2025 report announcement was published June 3, 2025.

How to tell whether your approach is working
- Delivery: Are customers receiving the product or service, timing, and support they were led to expect?
- Effort: Where do customers have to repeat information, chase updates, or navigate avoidable steps?
- Recovery: Do customers know what happens next when something goes wrong, and are repeat issues declining?
- Relevance and control: Do communications help customers, and can they adjust their preferences or correct their information?
- Consistency: Can staff see the context they need across the channels where customers seek help?
Use feedback and operating measures together. A retention figure alone may show that behavior changed without explaining why; customer comments and patterns in service issues can help identify where delivery or communication needs attention. Treat results as signals to investigate, not as proof that a particular tactic caused loyalty.
