That is a difference of about £60,000 between the reported salary figures—not a comparison of guaranteed total annual earnings. Match fees are additional in both groups, and the figures are not an official pay scale.

These figures were reported by BBC Sport on 28 January 2025, updated 7 April 2025. The £180,000 figure is an average, while the Championship amount is what salaries were thought to be; neither is an official published rate. The roughly £60,000 gap is simply the difference between those reported salary figures. It does not show the difference between every referee’s total annual earnings.
Why the figures do not represent total earnings
A referee’s total can include salary and match fees, and may also vary with experience, appointments, bonuses, or European and international matches. The BBC report does not provide a universal annual total for each referee or quantify all additional payments. So it is not possible to use the reported salary figures alone to calculate what a particular official earned in a season.
“EFL referees” does not mean one pay category
The reported £120,000 estimate applies specifically to Championship Select Group Two referees—not every official who referees an EFL match. The EFL covers multiple divisions and appointments, and the evidence here does not establish one salary for all those officials.

There is also a change in group structure. On 30 June 2026, the Premier League announced that from the 2026/27 season the former Select Group 1, Select Group 2 and supplementary list would be combined into a Professional Referee Group serving the Premier League and EFL Championship. The announcement describes the reorganisation but does not state a new salary or match-fee scale. The Premier League’s referees information page describes Pro Ref’s remit across Premier League, EFL, WSL Football and FA competitions, but does not publish pay rates. The BBC’s older group figures therefore should not be presented as confirmed rates for the restructured 2026/27 group.

A First-tier Tribunal decision dated 1 May 2026 concerned Level 1 National Group referees and the 2014/15 and 2015/16 tax years. It found those referees had no salary or retainer and were paid only for matches they actually officiated. That is a specific historical finding about a different referee group; it does not establish the current pay of Championship Select Group Two, the new Professional Referee Group, or all EFL match officials. The decision is Professional Game Match Officials Ltd & Anor v Revenue and Customs [2026] UKFTT 654 (TC).
