Under the EFL’s ordinary insolvency rule, a club entering administration receives a 12-point deduction. Sheffield Wednesday received that deduction in October 2025. Its 2025/26 total reached 18 points after separate disciplinary proceedings, while a further 15-point deduction considered after the club exited administration in May 2026 was not imposed.
How the EFL’s administration deduction works
The EFL’s 2025/26 regulations provide for a 12-point deduction when a club enters administration. The EFL said Sheffield Wednesday’s appointment of administrators on 24 October 2025 triggered the automatic deduction under regulations agreed by its member clubs. See the EFL regulations and handbook page and the EFL’s statement of 24 October 2025.
Regulation 12.6 addresses a specific circumstance: if a club is subject to more than one listed insolvency procedure during a process of compromising creditors, it receives one set of 12 points, effective from the first insolvency event. That wording concerns procedures within that creditor-compromise process; it should not be read as a blanket rule for every possible later insolvency event.
Why Sheffield Wednesday’s 2025/26 deduction reached 18 points
The 18-point figure was the combined total of distinct sanctions, not an 18-point administration penalty. On 19 December 2025, the EFL said that administration and separate Independent Disciplinary Commission proceedings concerning 2024/25 breaches had resulted in 18 points being deducted in the 2025/26 season. In the same statement, it said a Club Financial Review Panel decision about payment-obligation breaches in 2025/26 would not result in additional points being deducted. What happened after the club left administration
On 2 May 2026, following an agreement by the administrators to transfer club assets to new ownership, the EFL confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday met relevant requirements and was no longer regarded as in administration. The EFL Board considered whether to impose a separate 15-point deduction after the exit. It decided against doing so, exercising discretion under the Insolvency Policy. The club did not receive that 15-point sanction. Read the EFL’s statement of 2 May 2026.
How to distinguish the three figures
| Points | What the figure refers to | Was it imposed? |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | The ordinary EFL deduction triggered by entering administration; Sheffield Wednesday received it in October 2025. | Yes |
| 18 | Sheffield Wednesday’s combined 2025/26 deductions for administration and separate disciplinary proceedings concerning 2024/25 breaches. | Yes |
| 15 | A separate deduction considered after the club exited administration in May 2026. | No; the EFL Board decided not to impose it. |
The figures describe different rule bases and events. For a hypothetical future administration, 12 points is the ordinary rule, but the outcome in any future case would depend on the applicable regulations and the circumstances at that time.
