The deadlines discussed that spring were part of a completed sale process, not a live countdown to suspension. Nor do the EFL’s published rules make suspension an automatic consequence of missing a takeover deadline.

Could the EFL suspend a club just because a takeover deadline expires?
Not automatically on the basis of an expired takeover deadline, according to the published rules cited here. The EFL regulations provide suspension powers in specified director-related circumstances. For example, the League may suspend a club where a director has received notice to resign or be removed and the club fails to ensure that removal. The rule is not a general countdown under which a club must be suspended once a sale deadline passes. EFL Regulations, Section Six
That distinction matters in Reading’s case: the 2025 announcements establish extensions and eventual completion, but do not establish a fixed suspension date triggered by the earlier deadline. A claim that the EFL was required to suspend Reading immediately after a deadline would go beyond those published facts and rules.
How long does an EFL takeover normally take?
There is no standard timetable that applies to every change of control. The EFL’s current acquisition guidance says that potential takeovers must meet both EFL and Independent Football Regulator requirements, and that case complexity and regulatory requirements vary. The guidance describes the current framework, including the Owners’ and Directors’ Source of Wealth and Expenditure (ODSE) regime introduced on 5 May 2026. That present-day context should not be confused with the specific 2025 extensions and announcements in Reading’s sale process.

What to take from the old deadline reports
- The 5 May and 8 May 2025 dates were historical steps in the sale process, not current deadlines.
