Hans Hürlimann’s tractor story began with a practical problem: Swiss farms needed machines suited to steep, difficult terrain. In 1929, the mechanic designed the 1K8, a single-cylinder petrol tractor fitted with a mower. The SDF Historical Archive records that 416 were produced. From that small beginning, Hürlimann developed an influential Swiss tractor maker whose engineering milestones included a direct-injection diesel, exported models and increasingly powerful machines before the company joined SAME in 1979.
Who was Hans Hürlimann?
Hans Hürlimann was a Swiss mechanic with a farming background. His work was rooted in the demands of agriculture in Switzerland, where hilly terrain made suitable farm equipment especially important. Rather than beginning with a large factory, he started by designing a tractor for that setting.
The 2025 account in Successful Farming frames the company’s rise as the result of successive machines and technical development. The official SDF Historical Archive chronology supplies the key model dates and production details.
What was the first Hürlimann tractor?
The 1K8 and the start of production
In 1929, Hürlimann designed the 1K8, a single-cylinder petrol tractor with a mower. The SDF archive says 416 were produced. The following year, Maison Hürlimann was established, and the 1K10 developed the first tractor further. These are related but distinct milestones: the 1K8 came first; the formal business followed in 1930.

From workshop to industrial plant
Hürlimann’s first industrial plant at Wil, in the canton of St. Gallen, was completed between 1937 and 1939, according to the SDF chronology. That progression—from an initial tractor to an established business and then an industrial site—helps explain how a small-scale beginning could support more ambitious engineering.
How did Hürlimann’s tractors develop?
The company’s early history combines design changes with responses to operating conditions and market opportunities. The milestones below are drawn from the SDF archive; priority claims are presented as the archive describes them, not as universal firsts.

| Year | Model or development | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| 1939 | Wide-angle front axle; 4DT45 | The archive dates a patent for a front axle with a wide steering angle to this year. It also records the four-cylinder, direct-injection diesel 4DT45 as the first Hürlimann tractor of this type. |
| 1940 | Coal-gas adaptation | Hürlimann diesel tractors were adapted to run on coal gas. The archive also records tests of rear wheels with pressure-spring suspension and no tyres. |
| 1950 | D 600 | The D 600 launched and was exported, especially to Argentina. The archive’s entry also notes a motor-harrow patent and documents productivity of 6,162 m² of tilled land per hour for that motor harrow—not for a tractor. |
| 1958 | D90 | The D90 came off the production line. Hürlimann built and assembled its engine, clutch, gearbox gears, axle and hydraulics, according to the archive. |
| 1969 | DH6 | The six-cylinder DH6 launched with a 155 hp engine. |
| 1972 | D115T | The archive describes the D115T as using the first turbocharged engine in a medium-power class. That is the archive’s characterization rather than an independently established global-first claim. |
Why did the company matter beyond Switzerland?
Hürlimann’s influence came from sustained engineering and manufacturing development, not from one breakthrough alone. The 1K8 established a practical starting point; the 4DT45 and wide-angle axle marked technical advances; and exports of the D 600, especially to Argentina, show the company reaching beyond its home market.
The 2025 Successful Farming article describes more than 300 different Hürlimann models across an 88-year history. That count is the article’s figure; the SDF timeline cited here does not independently verify it. The broader arc is nevertheless visible in the archive’s record of distinct models and escalating capabilities, from a single-cylinder petrol machine to the six-cylinder DH6 and turbocharged D115T.

When did Hürlimann become part of SAME?
Hürlimann merged with SAME in 1979, forming the SLH group, according to the SDF chronology. SDF’s corporate history likewise lists Hürlimann’s acquisition in 1979. The same corporate history dates the later DEUTZ-FAHR acquisition to 1995. Those dates describe separate steps in the group’s development, not a single takeover event.
Today, Hürlimann belongs to the wider SDF corporate history; the phrase “technological giant” is best understood as a description of the company’s historical influence, not its present standalone scale. SDF’s corporate history provides the company-level chronology.

How to find historical information about a Hürlimann tractor
Owners and researchers can start with the SDF Historical Archive’s overview. The archive says inquiries should include the tractor’s exact model and serial number, which helps identify a specific machine in its historical and technical collections.
SDF reported in 2020 that digitized use and maintenance manuals, workshop manuals and spare-parts catalogues for its brands, including Hürlimann, were available for purchase. That announcement is dated, so check the archive’s current materials and terms before relying on availability. Its materials page also describes items held in the archive, including scale models; an institutional collection listing does not mean those models are for sale.
