Officer’s Choice, an Indian whisky brand owned by Allied Blenders & Distillers (ABD), became the world’s largest spirits brand by reported sales volume in calendar year 2014. It sold 28.4 million nine-litre cases, ahead of Smirnoff’s 25.6 million. This was a volume ranking for that year—not a claim about revenue or the brand’s current position.
First, Officer’s Choice climbed to the top of whisky
The ascent began within whisky. In 2013, Officer’s Choice sold 23.8 million nine-litre cases, mostly in India, and overtook Johnnie Walker to become the largest whisky brand by volume in the ranking reported by The Spirits Business. It ranked third among all spirits brands, behind Jinro and Smirnoff, and its reported volume had grown 31% year over year.
In 2014, it passed Smirnoff in the broader spirits ranking
The following year, Officer’s Choice moved from leading whisky to leading the all-spirits volume ranking. The Spirits Business reported 28.4 million nine-litre cases for Officer’s Choice in 2014, up 19%, while Smirnoff recorded 25.6 million, down 2%.
| Brand | 2014 reported sales | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Officer’s Choice | 28.4 million nine-litre cases | Up 19% |
| Smirnoff | 25.6 million nine-litre cases | Down 2% |
These figures are from The Spirits Business’ 2015 account of its Brand Champions report, not a comparison of revenue or retail value. The gap was 2.8 million nine-litre cases. In other words, Officer’s Choice beat Smirnoff on reported case volume for that calendar year; the ranking does not show which brand generated more money.

How its market approach supported high volume
Retrospective reporting by Quartz describes Officer’s Choice as low-priced and points to a focused brand effort and improved distribution as factors in its growth. Nita Kapoor Roy, an ABD executive quoted by Quartz, said the company did not price the brand above competitors and called improved distribution one of the most crucial factors in scaling growth.
That account offers an explanation, not a measured breakdown of causes. The available reporting does not establish an exact price difference against Smirnoff or quantify how much growth came from pricing, brand focus, or distribution individually. The defensible takeaway is that a mass-market whisky with strong reach in its home market built enough case volume to top a global spirits ranking.

What “world’s largest” means—and what it does not
Here, “largest” means highest reported sales volume in a specific ranking for calendar year 2014. It does not mean highest revenue, most valuable brand, or the largest spirits brand today. The unit used in the 2013–14 industry reporting is the nine-litre case; keep that unit attached to those figures.
Later figures use different periods and reporting contexts. ABD’s FY 2022–23 annual report states that Officer’s Choice sold 18.82 million cases and held a 35.4% share of India’s mass-premium whisky segment. ABD’s FY 2023–24 report gives 18.7 million cases and says the brand ranked third among whisky brands and sixth among spirits brands in the Drinks International listing it cites. Those company-reported figures are not like-for-like extensions of the 2014 calendar-year ranking.

The story, then, is not that a low price by itself defeated a better-funded rival. It is that Officer’s Choice first became whisky’s volume leader in the cited 2013 ranking, then reached the top of the broader spirits volume list in 2014, with reporting pointing to competitive pricing, focused brand-building, and distribution as contributors.
