Complete the DP’s KYC and identity checks, verify your bank details, provide the requested photograph and signature, and sign the account-opening documents. Review the DP’s current tariff and terms before you submit.
What a demat account does—and who opens it
A demat account holds securities in electronic form. A trading account is the facility used to buy and sell securities on an exchange; the two accounts serve different purposes, even when a provider offers them together in one onboarding application. SEBI identifies NSDL and CDSL as India’s depositories, but investors open accounts through a SEBI-registered DP affiliated with a depository—not directly with NSDL or CDSL. Banks, stockbrokers and financial institutions may act as DPs. SEBI’s overview of starting to invest and its explanation of depositories and DPs describe these roles.
How do I open a demat account?
- Choose a DP. Check that it is SEBI-registered and affiliated with NSDL or CDSL. Compare convenience and accessibility, reputation, whether it offers the services you need, charges and service standards. NSDL recommends considering these factors in its investor FAQ.
- Start the application with the DP. Use the provider’s current application channel. NSDL describes an online route that directs applicants to the selected DP’s portal; some providers may offer a trading account in the same onboarding journey. Confirm which accounts and services you are applying for.
- Complete KYC and identity checks. The online flow NSDL describes can include mobile and email OTPs, PAN verification, use of existing KYC records where available, and identity or address records retrieved digitally, such as through DigiLocker. Follow the selected DP’s current instructions: the exact checks depend on the application route and account type.
- Verify your bank details and provide account information. NSDL’s described process includes bank verification, which may use a penny-drop or another bank API check, or a signed cancelled cheque. The application may also request personal details, an income range and information about nomination or opting out of nomination.
- Submit the requested photograph and signature, then sign. NSDL’s online instructions include a live photograph, a signature image and electronic signing. The verification method can vary: NSDL lists digital KYC routes for which IPV is not required, so do not assume every applicant must complete video IPV.
- Read, save and retain the documents. Review the account-opening terms and fee schedule before signing. SEBI’s Investor Charter says investors are entitled to copies of KYC and account-opening documents and to information about fees.
What documents are required to open a demat account?
There is no single checklist established here for every residency, account type and application route. NSDL’s FAQ describes a photograph and self-attested identity and address proof, with originals for verification in the process it outlines. Its online instructions also describe PAN checks, bank verification, digital KYC records and documents retrieved from digital sources where applicable.
Before starting, have your PAN, identity and address details, bank information, photograph and signature ready. Then use the chosen DP’s current checklist as the controlling list; it will tell you what to upload, retrieve digitally or present for verification. See NSDL’s FAQ and online account-opening guidance.

What does a demat account cost?
SEBI’s Investor Charter states that no charge is payable for opening a demat account and that no minimum balance is required. These statements do not mean every account service or transaction is free. Check the DP’s current published tariff for annual maintenance and any service or transaction-related charges. The charter also gives the following annual maintenance charge (AMC) limits for eligible Basic Services Demat Accounts (BSDAs):
| BSDA holding value | Maximum AMC stated in SEBI’s Investor Charter |
|---|---|
| Holdings up to ₹50,000 | No AMC |
| Holdings from ₹50,001 to ₹2,00,000 | Not more than ₹100 |
| Debt securities holdings up to ₹1,00,000 | No AMC |
| Debt securities holdings from ₹1,00,001 to ₹2,00,000 | Not more than ₹100 |
These are the limits stated in SEBI’s Investor Charter; check the charter and DP tariff for the terms applicable to your account.

How to compare DPs before applying
- Registration and depository affiliation: Verify that the provider is a SEBI-registered DP affiliated with NSDL or CDSL.
- Convenience: Consider how you will complete onboarding and access account services.
- Service fit: Confirm the DP can provide the services you need and understand whether you are opening a demat account alone or also applying for a trading account.
- Charges: Read the current tariff, not just an advertisement for a “free” account. Opening charges, maintenance and transaction or service charges are distinct questions.
- Service standards and reputation: Compare the provider’s stated service standards and reputation, as NSDL advises.
Can you have more than one demat account?
Yes. SEBI’s Investor Charter says an investor may open more than one demat account in the same name, either with one DP or with different DPs. Compare the terms and charges for each account before opening another.
