GameStop pre-orders work differently depending on whether you reserve an item in a store, place an online order for store pickup, or have it shipped. In-store reservations generally use a deposit and later balance; online pickup pre-orders are charged in full when placed; shipped pre-orders are charged around shipment, though a temporary card authorization may appear beforehand. Pickup deadlines, cancellation eligibility, and refunds also depend on the channel and order status.
Compare the three ways to pre-order

How an in-store reservation works
At a GameStop store, you reserve an item with a deposit and pay the rest later. GameStop’s pre-order help page, displayed as updated September 25, 2026, lists a $10 minimum deposit for most games and collectibles and a $100 minimum for larger items such as systems and collector’s editions. These are published minimums, not a guarantee that every item uses the same amount; ask the store about the specific product.
You can add money to the reservation before release, pay it off early, or pay the remaining balance when you pick it up. You must redeem it at the store where you placed the reservation. Most in-store reservations should appear in your order history; if yours does not, contact the store where you made it.

How online pickup pre-orders work
For a pre-order placed online for store pickup, GameStop says it charges the designated payment method in full when you place the reservation; it does not accept a deposit or partial payment for this channel. Choose the pickup store carefully: the reservation cannot be transferred to a different location. Check your account’s order history for the order status, expected release date, and pickup information.
Do not apply the online pickup payment rule to a shipped order. GameStop’s pages describe different payment timing for shipping, including a possible temporary authorization before shipment. For a shipped pre-order, use the payment and status information shown for that specific order.

How shipped pre-orders work—and when you are charged
GameStop’s shipping guidance says pre-orders ship when the item is released. A separate order-delay help page says the item is not charged until it ships, although a temporary authorization may appear on the card as the release date approaches. The shipping FAQ says the shipping fee is charged when the pre-order ships. Check your order details for the charge timing and amount that apply to your purchase.
Release-day delivery is not guaranteed. A publisher may change the release date, or manufacturer shipments, fulfillment, or carrier delays may push delivery later. GameStop’s shipping FAQ, last updated May 20, 2026, says it does not ship outside the continental United States and that shipping fees are non-refundable. Pre-orders with different release dates can incur separate shipping charges. Confirm current eligibility and shipping charges at checkout.

Can you cancel a GameStop pre-order?
In-store reservation
GameStop’s pre-order help page says you can request a refund up to 30 days after release, either to the original payment method or in cash; after 30 days, it says the refund is store credit. GameStop’s account terms describe a reservation not redeemed or canceled within 30 days as converting to a non-expiring digital gift card redeemable for GameStop merchandise, with no fees deducted from the balance. Because the help page and terms describe the outcome differently, contact the store where you reserved the item and check the current terms for your case.
Online pickup or shipped order
Online pickup pre-orders can generally be canceled if they are still eligible. GameStop’s pickup FAQ says requests made more than 30 days before release are refunded to the original payment method; eligible requests made after that point are refunded as a digital gift card. Its terms say a pickup reservation canceled before pickup is refunded to the original payment method, or as a digital gift card if that payment cannot be refunded. Refund treatment can therefore depend on timing and order status.

For online orders, GameStop’s cancellation help says account holders can use the cancellation option while an order has not entered final processing. A guest order requires assistance. If the cancellation button is unavailable, the order may already be processing or preparing to ship and may no longer be cancelable. Check the order page or contact GameStop support promptly rather than assuming a cancellation has gone through.
What happens if you miss pickup?
For an in-store reservation, GameStop says you have 48 hours after release to pick up the reserved copy. After that, the copy may be released to another customer, while your deposit remains on your GameStop account. This is an inventory-hold window—not the same thing as the 30-day deadline for redeeming or canceling the reservation balance.
For an online pickup order available by the release date, GameStop’s terms say an order not picked up or canceled within 30 days is converted to a non-expiring digital gift card. If the item will not be available by release, GameStop says it will notify you and explain the cancellation or refund option. If the delay exceeds 30 days, or there is no known revised date, the terms provide for automatic cancellation and refund unless you affirmatively agree to wait longer.
Are coupons or preorder bonuses included?
GameStop’s pre-order help page says coupons cannot be used on pre-orders. Bonus items are available while supplies last, so a listed bonus is not necessarily guaranteed; if supplies run out, the item purchase remains valid, but the bonus may not be replaced. Read the particular listing and its terms before treating a bonus as part of what you are guaranteed to receive.
