How Winter Wheat Can Boost Returns in Corn–Soybean Rotations

Winter wheat can add a second harvest to some corn–soybean systems, but profitability depends on local yields, prices, costs and the narrow window for planting the next crop.

Winter wheat can improve returns in some corn–soybean systems, particularly when it is harvested early enough to plant double-crop soybeans. But an extra crop does not guarantee extra profit: local yields, weather, prices, costs and the ability to plant and harvest on time determine whether the rotation beats alternatives.

How wheat can add value to a corn–soybean system

Double cropping means raising a crop between summer crops on the same field to increase its productive value. USDA Economic Research Service gives winter wheat after corn and soybeans after wheat as an example (USDA ERS).

Where wheat is harvested in time for a second crop, the field produces two harvests in a year. That can add revenue and spread fixed costs such as land, taxes and machinery across more production. Whether those benefits outweigh the extra seed, fertilizer, crop protection, labor, machinery, drying and marketing costs depends on the farm’s circumstances; Missouri Extension emphasizes that weather and management affect success (Missouri Extension).

What field studies say about yields and returns

Illinois: results varied by location

University of Illinois Extension summarizes experiments conducted at Monmouth, Perry and Brownstown from 2006 through 2016. Adding wheat increased soybean yields by an average of 4% across the locations. Corn yields rose 4% at Monmouth and 6% at Perry, while Brownstown saw no change. At two locations, wheat yields were 4%–10% higher when wheat followed soybeans rather than corn (University of Illinois Extension).

Brownstown, in southern Illinois, was the site where double-crop soybeans followed wheat. Over ten favorable years, those soybeans averaged about 75% of full-season soybean yield. The study characterized the three-crop system with double-crop soybeans there as productive and profitable. That is a result from a particular site and study period, not a general yield expectation for other regions or seasons.

South Dakota: diversified rotations outperformed selected comparisons

A USDA Agricultural Research Service dataset page summarizes an economic analysis of long-term South Dakota rotation trials. In the fifth four-year cycle, covering 2017–2020, diversified systems that included winter wheat and soybeans had higher corn and soybean yields and higher net revenue overall than two-year corn–soybean and continuous-corn systems (USDA Agricultural Research Service). The result applies to those trials, rotations and years; it does not establish that every wheat rotation will be more profitable than local alternatives.

How to compare the economics on your farm

Compare the contribution margins of the full sequence, not wheat by itself. Purdue’s 2026 crop-budget guidance says double-crop soybeans commonly follow wheat and advises combining their contribution margins when comparing the sequence with other crop enterprises. The estimates reflect prices and costs from early January 2026 and may be updated, so they are a budgeting framework rather than a current, guaranteed advantage (Purdue University).

  1. Set the alternatives. Compare wheat followed by double-crop soybeans with the realistic crop sequence you would otherwise plant on that field.
  2. Estimate local production. Use plausible wheat and second-crop yields for your area, including the possibility that the second crop yields less or varies more than full-season soybeans.
  3. Include all relevant costs. Account for seed, fertilizer, crop protection, labor, machinery, harvest, drying, storage and marketing for both crops.
  4. Check operating capacity. Consider whether labor, equipment, storage and marketing arrangements can handle the added crop and compressed schedule.
  5. Compare whole-sequence returns. Add the crops’ expected contribution margins and weigh them against the alternative sequence, using current local prices and costs.

A single national dollar-per-acre advantage is not established by the available studies. A farm-specific budget is more useful because it makes the assumptions visible and can be revised as prices, costs or expected yields change.

Why location and timing matter

The key practical question is whether wheat harvest leaves enough time to establish the follow-on crop. Missouri Extension notes that the remaining season is short in northern Missouri and highlights soybean establishment and weed control as important management concerns. Its recommendations use maturity groups adapted to different Missouri regions, underscoring that variety choice and planting windows should be local rather than generic (Missouri Extension).

Before committing acreage, check locally adapted wheat varieties, winter hardiness, planting dates and maturity, as well as the realistic harvest-to-planting interval for the next crop. Local extension guidance and seed suppliers can help match those choices to the region and intended use.

Keep harvested wheat distinct from a cover crop

Harvested winter wheat is a cash crop; an unharvested winter cover crop is grown primarily for soil and environmental benefits. USDA ERS treats double cropping and cover cropping as distinct practices, although both may be part of a broader rotation (USDA ERS). Do not assume that benefits associated with cover crops automatically apply to harvested wheat without evidence for the specific system.
