How to Cash a Check: Save Money and Avoid Problems

Your own bank is often the lowest-fee place to start, but policies vary. Compare cashing options, check deposit holds, and protect yourself from fake-check scams.

The lowest-cost place to start is usually the bank or credit union where you already have an account: customers generally do not pay a check-cashing fee there. If you do not have an account, call the institution printed on the check before making a trip; it may cash the check for a noncustomer, but it can charge a fee or refuse. If you deposit instead, do not assume the full amount will be available immediately—and never send money back based on a check from someone you do not know and trust.

Choose the route that fits your check and your need for cash

Decide first whether you need cash in hand or can wait for a deposit to become available. Your own institution, the bank named on the check, and other check-cashing providers have different policies. A bank or retailer may refuse a check, so confirm its requirements and total fee before traveling or endorsing it.

Route Who can use it Cost and acceptance What you receive Availability and convenience
Your bank or credit union Account holders The FDIC says customers generally do not pay a check-cashing fee at their own financial institution. Deposit and cashing services depend on that institution. Cash if the institution cashes it; otherwise, a deposit to your account. Ask about branch, ATM, or mobile options and any hold or cutoff that applies. See the FDIC’s Deposit Accounts guidance and your institution’s policy.
Bank or credit union named on the check Potentially, including noncustomers It may cash the check under its policy, charge a fee, or refuse. It is not required to cash it for a noncustomer. Cash if accepted. Call before visiting. Ask about the payee, check age, funds, identification, and fee. CFPB guidance: Can I cash a check at any bank or credit union?
Another check-cashing provider Depends on the provider Fees and acceptance limits vary; there is no universal current fee or acceptance limit established here. Ask for the exact charge and conditions. Usually cash if accepted; confirm before proceeding. Compare the full fee and travel with other options. The FTC’s paycheck example illustrates why shopping around can matter; its figures are not current market quotes.
Deposit by branch, ATM, or mobile app Usually an account holder using an eligible deposit channel Any fees, deposit limits, cutoffs, and holds depend on the institution and channel. Funds credited to an account, not cash in hand at the time of deposit. Availability may be delayed. Check the institution’s rules for the particular check and deposit method.

If you have an account, start with your own institution

Ask your bank or credit union whether it will cash the check or whether depositing it is the better option. The FDIC says customers generally do not pay a check-cashing fee at the financial institution where they have an account. That does not mean every check can be cashed at every branch or that a deposit will be available immediately: the institution’s check, channel, and hold rules still apply.

If you use an ATM or mobile deposit, follow the exact instructions in your institution’s app or at the ATM. For example, Bank of America instructs mobile-deposit users to photograph the front and the endorsed back of the check in its app. It says its mobile deposit feature has no additional fee, although carrier charges may apply. That is a Bank of America-specific example, not a general workflow or promise about when funds will be available. See Deposit Checks Online Using the Mobile Banking App.

If you do not have an account, call the issuing institution first

Call the bank or credit union printed on the check and ask whether it cashes checks for noncustomers. CFPB guidance says institutions often cash checks drawn on their own account when the check is no more than six months old, the person presenting it is the named payee, funds are available, and the person shows proper identification. These are reported conditions, not a guarantee: the institution may have different requirements, charge a fee, or decline the transaction. See the CFPB’s explanation of noncustomer check cashing.

Before going, ask specifically:

  • Does the branch cash this type of check for a noncustomer?
  • Must the payee be present, and which forms of identification are accepted?
  • Does the check’s date or amount affect acceptance?
  • Can the institution confirm that funds are available, and what fee will it charge?
  • Are there other conditions or branch-specific limits?

A bank is generally allowed to charge a noncustomer a fee for cashing a check; it is not required to provide the service. State laws may require an employer to make wages available without a fee in some circumstances. For state-specific rules, check with your state banking regulator, labor department, or attorney general. See the CFPB’s page on fees for cashing a check as a noncustomer.

When comparing alternatives, get the fee in dollars before handing over or endorsing the check. In one FTC paycheck illustration, a check-cashing store charged 10% of the paycheck, a grocery store charged $10, and the issuing bank cashed it free. Those are example figures, not current universal prices; your actual fee depends on the provider and check. The point is to compare the amount you will actually receive, not just the convenience of the first place you visit.

If you deposit the check, plan for a possible hold

A deposit showing in your account does not necessarily mean the entire amount is ready to spend. The CFPB says timing can depend on the kind of check, how and when it is deposited, the institution’s policy, and whether an exception applies. Ask your institution when the funds from this specific deposit will be available, and whether a cutoff time changes the answer.

For ATM deposits, CFPB guidance says a check deposited at your own institution’s ATM could take up to two business days to become available. For a deposit at another institution’s ATM, funds are generally required to be available on the fifth business day after the deposit day, although the institution may make them available sooner. See the CFPB’s ATM deposit guidance.

The CFPB’s funds-hold page, last reviewed August 28, 2026, describes generally next-business-day availability for certain deposits, including cash deposited in person, checks of $225 or less deposited in person, electronic payments, some government, cashier’s, and certified checks deposited in person or at the institution’s own ATM, and personal checks deposited in person and drawn on the same institution. It also identifies circumstances that can lead to longer holds: a new account, repeated overdrafts, a deposit at another institution’s ATM, a potentially uncollectible or suspected fraudulent check, an emergency, or a check over $5,525. Mobile deposits may follow a different timetable. These are general rules and exceptions, not a guarantee for every transaction. Consult the institution’s specific policy and the CFPB’s current page, How long can a bank or credit union hold funds I deposited?.

Separately, CFPB and Federal Reserve threshold adjustments effective July 1, 2025 raised the Regulation CC minimum amount to $275 and the large-deposit threshold to $6,725. Those adjusted thresholds are distinct from the $5,525 amount cited in the CFPB consumer page’s described schedule; do not treat the figures as interchangeable. See the agencies’ Regulation CC threshold adjustment.

Endorse only when you are ready to complete the transaction

Wait to sign the back until you are ready to cash or deposit the check, and follow the receiving institution’s exact instructions. If the institution tells you to write “for deposit only” and sign, the CFPB describes that as a restrictive endorsement limiting the check to deposit into the payee’s account. A check endorsed that way by someone else should not be cashable by the next holder. Read the CFPB’s explanation of “for deposit only” endorsements.

Mobile-deposit wording and image requirements are not universal. Use the instructions shown by your own institution; do not assume another bank’s process applies to your account.

Protect yourself from fake-check scams

A check can look legitimate and still be fake. A bank may make funds available before it discovers a check is counterfeit, and that discovery can take weeks. If you have sent money onward, you may have to repay the bank when the check is rejected. The FTC’s advice is direct: “Your best bet: Don’t rely on money from a check unless you know and trust the person you’re dealing with.” Read How To Spot, Avoid, and Report Fake Check Scams.

Be especially cautious if a stranger sends you a check—often for more than expected—and asks you to return the difference or pay for something. Do not send money, gift cards, or a wire transfer for an overpayment, fees, taxes, supplies, or a transfer to another person on the strength of that check. In a 2020 alert, the FTC reported more than $28 million in consumer losses to fake-check scams in 2019 and a median reported loss of $1,988. These are historical FTC-reported figures for that year, not current annual loss estimates. See the FTC’s 2020 report.

Make the decision before you travel

  1. If you have an account: Call your bank or credit union or check its app to confirm whether it can cash or deposit the check, what identification or endorsement it needs, and when deposited funds should be available.
  2. If you do not have an account: Call the institution named on the check. Confirm it serves noncustomers, accepts your check, and tell you the exact fee and identification requirements.
  3. If that option fails: Compare other providers by the actual fee, acceptance conditions, travel, and whether you need cash immediately. Ask about employer-paycheck protections with the appropriate state office if relevant.
  4. Before signing: Follow the receiving institution’s endorsement instructions; do not sign or restrict the check before you know where it will be accepted.
  5. If anyone asks you to send part of the money onward: Treat it as a scam warning. Do not rely on the check unless you know and trust the person who gave it to you.
