How much you can fit depends on your largest items, how many boxes you have, whether you need room to reach them, and the specific unit’s dimensions. Use the size examples below as a starting point—not a guarantee—and confirm the local unit’s interior measurements and usable height before booking.
How to estimate the space you need
- List the bulky items first. Note furniture, mattresses, appliances, and anything unusually shaped. These items often determine whether a particular layout will work.
- Count boxes and bins. Group smaller belongings by container size. If you are still packing, count sturdy moving boxes as you go rather than relying on a rough household estimate.
- Measure the largest items and containers. Record height, width, and depth so you can compare them with the unit’s interior dimensions and plan how they might be arranged.
- Decide how much access you need. Frequent visits and space to move around require more room than tightly packed storage you do not expect to access often.
- Check stacking and usable height. Stacking can use vertical space, but it depends on sturdy boxes and safe placement, with heavier items on the bottom. Confirm the unit’s actual height and account for any layout constraints.
- Compare your inventory with the exact unit. If your estimate is close, allow for irregular shapes and access rather than assuming every bit of advertised volume will be usable.

What common unit sizes may hold
The following are examples from Public Storage’s size guide, not independent capacity measurements or guaranteed packing limits. The provider says sizes are approximate and may vary by facility. Its listed square-foot and cubic-foot figures describe its examples; verify the dimensions and usable height at the location you are considering.

These room labels are only rough guides. Public Storage describes a 5×15 as suitable for a large bedroom, a 10×10 for two small bedrooms, a 10×15 for a two-bedroom home, and a 10×20 for a three-bedroom home. Extra Space Storage gives several possible sizes for a one-bedroom apartment—5×5, 5×10, or 5×15—and lists a 10×10 or 10×15 as possibilities for a two-bedroom apartment. Why floor area is not the whole story
A unit’s square footage measures its floor footprint; cubic footage also reflects height. For example, Public Storage lists a 5×5 as 25 square feet and 200 cubic feet, and a 10×10 as 100 square feet and 800 cubic feet. Those examples imply an 8-foot height, but that does not establish the usable height of every unit. Ask the facility for the specific unit’s interior dimensions and usable height.
Even when a unit’s nominal measurements look sufficient, furniture shape, appliances, packing arrangement, and the space you need to reach belongings can affect whether everything fits. A tightly packed stack and an arrangement with a clear path do not use space in the same way.

How to avoid renting too much or too little
- Base your estimate on an actual inventory rather than the number of rooms in your home.
- Check whether the largest pieces can fit through the entrance and be arranged inside the unit.
- Decide in advance whether you need a path or space to retrieve particular belongings.
- Use vertical space only where your boxes and items can be stacked safely.
- Ask the facility to confirm the specific unit’s dimensions; advertised sizes are approximate and can vary by location.
