To find products worth investigating, start with a customer problem, then compare search interest with marketplace activity, competing offers, customer feedback, seasonality and your costs. A rising trend is a clue that interest may be changing—not proof that people will buy from you or that you can make a profit.
1. Start with a customer, not a viral-product list
Choose an audience you understand or a problem people are already trying to solve. Sources of ideas include recurring complaints in customer reviews, questions in support conversations, niche interests, underserved audiences and products that could be improved. A useful hypothesis is specific: for example, “This group needs a version of this product that is easier to store,” rather than “This product is popular.”
Write down the customer, the problem, the proposed product and what would make it meaningfully better than current alternatives. This gives you something to test, rather than a trend label to chase.
2. Generate several product hypotheses
Use more than one discovery route. Search tools can show which queries are gaining or holding interest; social media can surface emerging ideas; and marketplace bestseller or trending sections can reveal products being sold in a particular venue. Shopify’s 2026 product-research guidance recommends combining search, social and marketplace discovery rather than relying on one source.

For each candidate, record the exact product or search phrase, intended customer and target market. Note the date you checked and where the signal came from. Keep multiple candidates so you can compare them instead of committing to the first spike you notice.
3. Cross-check demand, competition and customer need
Search interest and marketplace activity measure different things. Neither on its own proves demand you can capture. For every candidate, look for a combination of evidence:
- Interest: Is the search signal rising, steady or declining in your intended geography and time period?
- Marketplace behavior: Are shoppers searching for or buying comparable products on the platform where you intend to sell?
- Competition: How many credible offers are already available, what do they cost, and how clearly do they meet the customer’s need?
- Customer gaps: What do reviews, questions or complaints say is missing, confusing, unreliable or inconvenient?
- Business fit: Can you offer a distinct benefit and deliver it at a price that leaves room for costs?
Amazon Product Opportunity Explorer groups related searches into niches and provides signals about demand, searches, competition, reviews and returns. Its unmet-demand indicators identify groups of similar search terms whose conversion rates fall below a benchmark; that is a reason to investigate the customer experience, not evidence that a product will succeed. Amazon describes the tool as a guide and does not guarantee sales outcomes.

4. Choose research tools that match your sales channel

Do not compare platform growth figures as though they came from one shared dataset. A search trend, an Etsy buyer query and Amazon purchases represent different populations and behaviors.
5. Check whether the trend is durable or seasonal
Compare more than one period. Where data is available, compare the current period with the same period in earlier years. A one-off spike may reflect a short-lived fad, a seasonal cycle or an event; it should prompt further keyword and marketplace research before you treat it as a durable opportunity.

Shopify’s 2026 trend guide describes categories such as home décor, skin care and gardening as having demand across seasons, while puffer jackets and holiday products shift with the season. Seasonality does not make a product automatically bad: it changes when you need to source, market and sell it, and how long you may have to recover costs.
Shopify’s 2026 list of 20 product categories among its merchants included shirts, skin care, makeup, vitamins and supplements, pants, dresses, motor vehicle parts, activewear, coats and jackets, sneakers and boots, arts and crafting materials, shampoo and soap, underwear, bedding, cycling, hats and accessories, alcoholic beverages, kitchen appliances, meat, and perfume and cologne. This is a Shopify merchant category list, not a universal ranking of what sells best everywhere.

Etsy’s Spring and Summer 2026 trend report uses Etsy searches and sales in the three months before February 10, 2026, compared with the same period a year earlier. Etsy characterizes the results as directional and based on U.S. signed-in user activity; its search-growth figures use normalized query volume. Use that report as context for Etsy’s U.S. audience, not as a measure of global demand.

Interest is only one part of the business case. Estimate the costs and selling price before ordering inventory or scaling production. Include:
- Product sourcing or production
- Shipping, packaging and fulfillment
- Marketplace and payment fees
- Returns and damaged or unsellable stock
- Marketing and customer acquisition
- Any other recurring costs needed to deliver the product
Then ask whether the proposed selling price is credible alongside competing offers and whether the product has a benefit customers can recognize. A product can attract attention and still be a poor choice if the costs leave too little room, the competition is difficult to distinguish from, or customers do not value the improvement.

7. Validate a shortlist before investing heavily
Once you have compared several candidates, choose a small shortlist and test response with a limited commitment. Depending on the product and sales channel, that could mean a small launch, a suitable preorder or an audience test, or a low-budget marketing experiment. Set a clear question in advance—such as whether the intended customers click, sign up, ask to buy or complete a purchase—and use the result to decide whether to refine, test again or stop.
A trend tool can help you decide what to investigate. Actual customer behavior in a small test gives you a more direct check on whether your offer resonates; it still does not guarantee the result of a larger launch.
