How much does it cost to build a website? It depends on what you are building and who does the work. Clutch’s May 2026 budgeting guide puts DIY builder fees and hosting at $10–$50 per month and a basic 5–10 page freelancer-built site at $500–$5,000. GoodFirms’ 2026 survey, covering more than 300 web-development firms across 31 countries, places a basic site or MVP at $1,000–$3,000 and enterprise sites at $20,000–$200,000 or more. These are planning ranges from different sources and methods, not like-for-like quotes.

Website cost ranges by build type

The price of a website is shaped by its scope: a simple informational site is not equivalent to an online store, custom web application, or enterprise platform. The figures below are source-specific estimates and survey ranges, not guaranteed prices for a defined specification.

Build type Reported range or figure What the figure represents
DIY builder and hosting $10–$50 per month Clutch’s May 2026 general budgeting range for builder fees and hosting. Platform-specific monthly ranges in the same guide are Wix $17–$159, Squarespace $16–$25, Shopify $25–$105, and WordPress $3–$30; subscription prices can change. Clutch budgeting guide
Freelancer-built basic site $500–$5,000 Clutch’s estimate for a basic 5–10 page site. Custom design, ecommerce, and integrations can raise the price; this is not a quote for a fixed scope. Clutch budgeting guide
Basic site or MVP $1,000–$3,000 GoodFirms’ 2026 survey range, based on responses from 300+ web-development firms across 31 countries. GoodFirms 2026 survey
Mid-sized business site $5,000–$20,000 GoodFirms’ 2026 survey range. GoodFirms 2026 survey
CMS site $5,000–$20,000 GoodFirms’ 2026 survey range. GoodFirms 2026 survey
Ecommerce site $5,000–$50,000 GoodFirms’ 2026 survey range. GoodFirms 2026 survey
Custom web application $20,000–$50,000 GoodFirms’ 2026 survey range. GoodFirms 2026 survey
Enterprise site $20,000–$200,000+ GoodFirms’ 2026 survey range. GoodFirms 2026 survey

The ranges differ because sources group projects and collect pricing differently. Use them to orient a budget, then compare written quotes for the same scope rather than treating any one figure as the going rate for every website.

What professional design and development may cost

Clutch’s web-design pricing guide says most web-design projects reviewed on its platform cost under $10,000, while the average reviewed project cost is $38,105.39. The average is much higher than the amount covering most reviewed projects, so it should not be read as the typical budget for a small business site. Clutch also reports a typical web-design company rate of $100–$149 per hour. These are platform-reported figures, not a price guarantee. Clutch web-design pricing guide

For web-development companies, Clutch lists an average hourly rate of $25–$49. That is a different service category from web design; the rates should not be compared as though they pay for the same work. Location, team composition, project size, and complexity affect development pricing. Clutch web-development pricing guide

What you may pay after launch

A build quote covers only the work it specifies. Clutch’s May 2026 budgeting guide lists these possible operating expenses, with broad ranges that depend on the setup:

Expense Clutch range Billing period
Domain name $0–$20 Per year
Web hosting $2–$80 Per month
SSL certificate $0–$1,000 Per year
Technical support $2–$300 Per month
Plugins $0–$600 Per month

These are separate possible charges, not a recommended total or a typical monthly bill. Some website builders bundle hosting and security into a subscription. With a self-hosted CMS, the owner may instead arrange hosting, a domain, themes, and plugins separately. Ask a provider which services are included, optional, or billed on top of the build price. What makes a website quote more expensive

Costs tend to rise when a project requires more than standard pages and basic publishing. Important cost drivers include:

  • More pages, content types, or complicated site structure.
  • Custom user experience, design, or functionality.
  • Ecommerce features such as product catalogs, checkout, and payment workflows.
  • Integrations with outside services, especially where data rules or edge cases need custom handling.
  • Bespoke content-management features. For example, a CMS built around custom workflows takes more work than one that simply allows image uploads.
  • Scope changes after work begins, including features or integrations omitted from the original specification.

GoodFirms identifies scope creep and third-party integrations as budget risks. Dan Haiem, CEO of App Makers USA, told GoodFirms: “The first invoice is the smallest number in the project. Scope creep and third-party integrations are what actually blow a website budget, and both are decided before anyone writes code. We spec every screen and every integration up front, because an integration that reads like one line on a proposal turns into weeks of work once you hit the other system’s rate limits and the edge cases nobody mapped.” This is a vendor executive’s perspective, not an independent statistical finding. Choose a build route based on your needs

Compare routes on upfront cost, recurring fees, flexibility, and the specific features your site needs. A lower starting price can still be a poor fit if the platform cannot support your requirements or the quote excludes essential work.

Route Potential fit Key trade-off to check
Website builder A smaller site when the owner is comfortable building within the platform’s capabilities. Check what the subscription bundles and whether the platform can support the features and integrations you need.
Self-hosted CMS A site that needs a content-management system with separately chosen hosting and tools. Software, hosting, domain, themes, and plugins may have separate costs; technical upkeep may fall to the owner or a paid provider.
Freelancer A project where paid individual expertise is needed for design, development, or launch. Define deliverables, revisions, support, and post-launch responsibilities rather than relying on a headline project fee.
Agency or development company A larger or more complex project that needs a team or broader service coverage. Compare team composition, detailed scope, timeline, exclusions, and ongoing support. Design and development are distinct services and may be priced differently.

How to get a quote you can actually compare

Give every provider the same written requirements. That makes it easier to see whether a lower quote reflects a lower price for equivalent work or simply leaves out needed features.

  1. List the pages and content types. State the expected page count and whether the site needs special templates or publishing workflows.
  2. Specify features and integrations. Note ecommerce requirements, payment or booking flows, third-party services, and what data must pass between systems.
  3. Separate essentials from optional work. Identify what must be included at launch and what could be added later.
  4. Clarify content and launch responsibilities. Say which text, images, and other assets you will supply, and what launch support you expect.
  5. Request line-item proposals against that scope. Ask each provider to list exclusions, revision limits, hosting, support, maintenance, timeline, and any ongoing charges.
  6. Resolve assumptions before signing. Confirm how changes are priced and who handles integration testing, updates, and post-launch issues.
