Micky Arison did not personally become a cruise operator: he helped lead Carnival Corporation’s growth into one. How Micky Arison entered the cruise business
Carnival’s story began in 1972, when Ted Arison founded the company around the converted ocean liner Mardi Gras. Micky Arison joined Carnival Cruise Line in 1974. The distinction matters: Ted founded the business, while Micky became a central executive in its subsequent expansion.
In 1979, Micky Arison became CEO. Carnival’s 2013 announcement described the company at that point as operating three ships under one brand, generating $44 million in revenue and carrying about 160,000 passengers a year. Those figures provide a sense of the relatively small operation he took over, not a measure of his personal income.
How Carnival grew into a global operator
Under Arison’s leadership, Carnival expanded both by building ships and by adding established cruise brands. New ships and capital for expansion
Shipbuilding increased Carnival’s capacity under its original brand. The public offering provided capital for growth, while a larger fleet helped the company serve more passengers and broaden its reach. Carnival’s 2013 announcement described a later historical snapshot under Arison’s leadership: more than 100 ships, 10 million passengers annually and over $15 billion in annual revenue. Those are company-reported figures from 2013, not current operating statistics.
Acquisitions and a multi-brand portfolio
Acquisitions added brands with their own identities and markets, rather than requiring Carnival to grow only through its original cruise line. Carnival’s 2013 filing names Holland America Line, Costa, Cunard and Seabourn among the brands acquired during its expansion. The 2003 merger with P&O Princess Cruises broadened the group further, adding brands including Princess, P&O and AIDA.

This combination of organic growth and acquisitions made Carnival a global operator with a portfolio of cruise lines. The available company history describes Arison as spearheading acquisitions and guiding expansion; it does not mean he personally founded every brand or executed every transaction alone.
What happened to Arison’s role at Carnival?
Arison’s tenure as CEO ended in 2013, when Carnival separated the CEO and chair positions. Arnold W. Donald became CEO effective July 3, 2013, while Arison remained chair. Carnival’s current leadership page still identifies Arison as chair. His role therefore shifted from running the company as CEO to chairing its board.
