But Argyle played in League One during that reporting year, so this is not a current Championship wage bill. A separate source rounds the 2024/25 figure to £21 million, and the available figures do not support a reliable ranking against Championship clubs.
Argyle’s latest reported wages
The latest filed account period identified in the Companies House history reviewed is the year ended 30 June 2025. The Accounts’ 2026 extraction lists statutory wages of £19,123,343 for that year, compared with £15,220,167 for 2023/24—an increase of 25.6% between the two reported periods. The Accounts
That statutory wages line should not automatically be read as the cost of Argyle’s first-team squad alone. A separate 2026 source, Dragon Football, describes its Companies House-derived figures as a rounded wage bill: £21 million for 2024/25 and £17 million for 2023/24. Those totals do not match the extracted statutory wages line, so they should be treated as different reported measures, not combined or substituted as if they were identical. Dragon Football
Why this is not a like-for-like Championship comparison
Argyle’s 2024/25 accounts cover a season in League One, following relegation from the Championship. The latest £19.12 million figure therefore describes a year outside the second tier; it cannot show where Argyle would rank among Championship clubs in that same season. Argyle’s 2023/24 accounts do cover a Championship season. The club reported total income of £26.7 million and a loss of £2.4 million for that year. It said more than £1 million of the loss came from player amortisation, with the remaining loss attributed to higher operating costs associated with competing in the Championship. The club also reported £11 million of additional investment from Simon Hallett and Argyle Green during 2023/24. Plymouth Argyle’s 2023/24 financial statement Plymouth Argyle’s explanation of the loss
In that accounts explanation, the club said: “Our revenue growth enables the club to progressively increase the player wage budget – a key driver of on-pitch performance.” Plymouth Argyle

What the Championship-wide figures can—and cannot—tell you
Deloitte’s 2026 review reports that Championship clubs generated £942 million in revenue in 2024/25, down £16 million (2%) year on year. It puts the division’s operating losses at £436 million, up 5%. These are league-wide totals, not Argyle’s figures, and they do not reveal a club-by-club wage ranking. Deloitte’s 2026 review
A defensible comparison would need accounts aligned by season, reporting entity and definition of wages. Total staff wages and playing-squad wages are not interchangeable; published figures may also differ in their treatment of employer taxes, pensions, bonuses, loanees or players who left during the year. Comparing wages as a share of turnover can add context, but parachute payments and changes in which clubs are in the division affect the picture. Deloitte notes that parachute payments materially shape Championship finances and that league revenue varies with club membership. Deloitte’s 2026 review

Which financial rules apply?
Rule comparisons need to match the club’s division and the season being discussed. The EFL announced in May 2026 that Championship Squad Cost Rules would replace Profitability and Sustainability rules from 2026/27. The EFL separately lists a Salary Cost Management Protocol for League One and League Two. These later rules should not be used to relabel Argyle’s 2024/25 League One accounts or its 2023/24 Championship season. EFL announcement on Championship Squad Cost Rules EFL regulations
