You can change your Steam store country when you have moved or are living abroad for an extended period. Steam’s stated process is to make your first purchase after the move using a payment method from your new country, then select the store-country change option when Steam offers it in your cart or at checkout. Changing regions just to shop for cheaper prices is not allowed: Valve prohibits disguising your residence to buy at prices that do not apply to your geography, and says it may terminate account access for doing so.
When you can change your Steam store country
Steam Support describes the country-change process for someone who has moved to a new place or is living abroad for an extended period. It is not a feature for choosing whichever country currently lists a game at the lowest price. Steam Support’s country-change guidance says the change is offered when Steam detects that your current location differs from your account’s store country.

How to change your store country after moving
- Be in your new country. Steam’s instructions apply when you have moved or are living abroad for an extended period.
- Add a game or other item to your cart and begin checkout. Make your first purchase after the move using a payment method from the new country.
- Choose the store-country change option if Steam offers it. Steam may display the option in the cart or during checkout after detecting that your location and current store country differ.
- Complete the purchase using the new-country payment method. If Steam does not offer the change or the purchase fails, follow the current Steam Support instructions or contact Steam Support rather than attempting to simulate a location.
Steam’s cited guidance does not say that a gift card, wallet code, or third-party service can replace the payment method from your new country. Do not rely on one as a workaround.
Why changing region just to get cheaper games is not allowed
Valve’s Subscriber Agreement prohibits using an IP proxy or another method to disguise where you live to bypass geographic restrictions or buy at prices that do not apply to your geography. “You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to order or purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, Valve may terminate your access to your Account.”
That restriction concerns misrepresenting residence to obtain a different region’s prices or access. If you have genuinely moved, use Steam’s supported process instead of a VPN or proxy.

Will changing your region make games cheaper?
There is no universally cheapest Steam country and no guarantee that a particular game will cost less after a legitimate move. Developers set prices for their games, and prices differ by title and currency. Valve’s Steamworks pricing documentation describes prices across 37 currencies and four region groups; its conversion tool uses exchange-rate, purchasing-power, and multi-variable approaches, based on public data as of January 2026. A SteamDB report dated March 31, 2026, described Valve’s March 2026 update to its pricing conversion data. At the $59.99 base-price tier, the report showed euro suggested prices ranging from €42.99 using purchasing-power conversion to €61.99 using the multi-variable method. If you have moved and want to assess a purchase, compare the current price of the specific game in your new store, any payment conversion costs and applicable taxes, and restrictions on that product. A price example or conversion recommendation does not establish that another country is cheaper for all games.

Some games have product-specific regional restrictions
Changing your store country does not guarantee access to every title or remove a game’s regional restriction. Steam Support says the countries included in a restriction can change. For a restricted product, it advises buying from your current location without a VPN or proxy, or obtaining a copy sold within your country of residence. For the specific wallet currency-mismatch error
If you are outside your home country and encounter Steam’s wallet currency-mismatch error, Steam Support says to retry using the payment instrument only—such as a credit card or PayPal—instead of the Steam Wallet. This instruction applies to that specific error, not every purchase or payment problem. Steam also warns against using another region’s store to bypass pricing or content restrictions. What to check before buying after a move
- Whether you have actually moved or are living abroad for an extended period, as required by Steam’s stated process.
- Whether your first purchase after the move can be made with a payment method from the new country.
- The specific game’s current price, rather than a country-wide assumption or a suggested conversion figure.
- Any payment conversion costs and applicable taxes.
- Whether the title is restricted in your current country; regional availability can vary by game and change over time.
