There is no single confirmed figure in the published accounts: one report says Sylvester Stallone received $35,000 for Rocky, while another puts his payment for the screenplay and acting work at about $75,000. Both accounts also describe participation in the film’s success, though they use different terms for it.
What did Stallone receive upfront for Rocky?
Published accounts disagree. Fox News, summarizing a 2019 Variety interview, reports that Stallone said he received $35,000 for the first film. The Philadelphia Inquirer, summarizing the same Variety reporting in 2022, says he was paid about $75,000 for the screenplay and acting work. The accounts do not reconcile the figures or make clear whether they count the same compensation categories.
The most careful answer is that his fixed compensation was reported in the tens of thousands of dollars, but the exact upfront amount is disputed. Neither figure should be presented as settled fact. (Fox News; The Philadelphia Inquirer)
Did he also receive a share of the film’s earnings?
Yes, accounts describe additional participation, but they do not use the same measure. The AFI Catalog summarizes an October 1976 Women’s Wear Daily report as saying Stallone was awarded one percent of gross for writing and two percent of gross for acting. The Inquirer’s summary of the later Variety account describes 10 net points.

“Gross” and “net” are not interchangeable: they refer to different bases for calculating a share. The available accounts do not establish that both arrangements applied, so they should not be combined into a single description of his contract. (AFI Catalog; The Philadelphia Inquirer)
Was Stallone offered $275,000 or more for Rocky?
Those larger amounts refer to offers for the screenplay rights—not the compensation he ultimately received under the production arrangement. The AFI Catalog summarizes a November 1976 Los Angeles Herald-Examiner item as reporting offers up to $275,000 for the rights. CBS News reports bidding as high as $360,000. In a February 3, 1977 interview, Stallone recalled an outside source offering “almost three hundred thousand.” These are reported rights offers, not salary or a payment he accepted for making the film.
