For orientation, 2025 and 2024 sources put monthly services anywhere from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, while fixed projects can run from roughly $1,000 to tens of thousands. Treat these as dated benchmarks—not a quote or a promise of results—and compare proposals for the same scope.
SEO pricing at a glance
The figures below come from different sources and methods, so they are not interchangeable. Backlinko and Ahrefs report survey findings; WebFX publishes a commercial pricing guide. The figures are not a single current market average, and global survey estimates may not match the market where your business operates.
| Pricing view | Reported figure | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly services | $1,000–$2,500 average monthly cost | Backlinko, 2025; based on a survey of more than 300 SEO professionals. Backlinko also describes price bands from under $500 to over $5,000 per month, reflecting differences in geography and scope. Backlinko’s pricing guide |
| Monthly spending | 63% of surveyed businesses spend $500–$5,000 per month | Ahrefs, 2024; its article reports a broad range of $250–$10,000 per month and says prices vary by region and provider type. Ahrefs’ survey |
| Monthly price by provider | Agencies: $3,209; freelancers: $1,348.63 | Ahrefs, 2024; survey-derived estimates calculated using the upper end of reported pricing brackets, not direct average invoice totals. Ahrefs’ survey |
| Local SEO | $1,557 per month on average; agencies $1,819 and freelancers about $1,150 | Ahrefs, 2024; provider-reported survey figures, not guaranteed quotes. WebFX’s guide lists local SEO at $300–$2,000 per month, with its publication date not established in the extracted guide. Ahrefs; WebFX pricing guide |
| Hourly services | $50–$100 average service range | Backlinko, 2025; rates vary with geography, experience, and specialization. Ahrefs, 2024, found $75–$100 was the most common hourly band, charged by 24% of respondents; its calculated $111 average uses the upper end of reported brackets. Backlinko; Ahrefs |
| Fixed projects | $1,000–$5,000 typical project range | Backlinko, 2025; examples include audits, content packages, and initial optimization. Ahrefs, 2024, found $2,501–$5,000 was the most common per-project band, charged by 21.2% of respondents. Backlinko; Ahrefs |
| Published guide ranges | Monthly: $1,500–$7,500; hourly: $100–$150; project: $5,000–$35,000 | WebFX commercial pricing guide; publication date not established in the extracted guide. It also lists ecommerce SEO at $750–$8,000 per month and audits at $650–$14,000 per project. WebFX pricing guide |
These are reference points, not a personal quote. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers in 2024; Backlinko surveyed more than 300 SEO professionals in 2025. Their samples, dates, and methods differ. WebFX’s figures are from its own guide rather than an independent survey.
Which pricing model fits the work?
The billing label matters less than what the provider will actually deliver. Match the model to the work’s duration, how clearly the output can be defined, and who is responsible for implementing recommendations.
| Model | Best suited to | What to define before agreeing |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | Ongoing work such as monitoring, technical improvements, content, and reporting. | Recurring tasks, named owners, reporting cadence, included hours or deliverables, and exclusions. Ahrefs reported that 78.2% of surveyed providers charged monthly retainers in 2024. Source |
| Hourly | A bounded consultation, technical task, or short intervention. | Expected hours, hourly rate, work product, authorization for extra time, and how completion will be shown. A rate alone does not say how many hours the task needs. |
| Fixed project | A defined deliverable such as an audit or initial optimization. | Scope and completion criteria, access required, whether the provider implements changes or only recommends them, and any follow-on work. |
| In-house staff | Organizations with enough continuing work to employ SEO expertise directly. | WebFX’s guide lists $55,000–$75,000 per team member, but its publication date is not established in the extracted guide and the figure is not a full loaded employment-cost calculation. Do not compare it directly with an agency quote. Source |
What determines your SEO quote?
- Site size and technical condition: A small local business site and a large ecommerce site with many product pages require different amounts and types of work. Existing technical problems can add discovery and implementation effort.
- Scope and goals: Basic keyword research and on-page optimization are not the same bundle as technical SEO, content production, strategy, or link building. International and ecommerce work can involve additional complexity.
- Competition and target market: The locations and search terms you target, the competitiveness of the market, and the business outcome you want influence the strategy and workload.
- Provider and geography: Agency, consultant, and freelancer prices vary, as do rates across regions. A global survey figure is not a like-for-like comparison of providers serving different markets.
- Experience and specialization: Backlinko’s 2025 survey associates more experience and specialized technical expertise with higher rates. That relationship does not prove that a higher-priced provider will produce better outcomes.
How to compare SEO proposals
Give each provider the same brief so that the proposals address the same business and site. Ask them to make assumptions and exclusions explicit rather than comparing headline prices alone.
- Describe the business and site: Include the site’s size, current condition, target locations, relevant technical issues, and business goals.
- Request specific deliverables: Ask what work will be done, how often, by whom, and what output you will receive. Separate one-time setup from recurring work.
- Clarify implementation: Establish who makes changes to the site and content, what access is needed, and whether the quoted provider will implement recommendations or only supply them.
- Ask about reporting and measurement: Identify what will be reported, how frequently, and which measures will be used to assess progress. No price point in the cited sources guarantees rankings, traffic, or revenue.
- Identify extra costs and boundaries: Ask what is outside scope, whether software or other expenses are additional, how extra work is approved, and what happens when the stated scope is complete.
- Compare scope, not just totals: Check whether proposals cover the same site, targets, tasks, time period, and responsibilities before deciding whether one is genuinely less expensive.
Budget for tools separately from labor
If you handle some work in-house, SEO software can be a separate subscription expense; it is not the same thing as paying for professional labor. Ahrefs offers tools for competitor research, site audits, keyword research, and rank tracking at Ahrefs. Semrush lists SEO and AI search plans at its pricing page. The available information does not establish that software replaces a provider or saves a particular business money.
