For a Tennessee resident ages 16–64, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) currently lists its annual hunt/fish combination license at $33; it is the minimum license listed for fishing and does not include trout coverage. A resident one-day license is $6 without trout or $11 for all species. Nonresidents ages 16 and older pay $49 annually without trout or $98 with trout. Processing fees apply, and TWRA has announced a proposed increase to the resident annual combination price without specifying when it takes effect.

Current Tennessee fishing license prices

The following prices are listed on the TWRA License Structure and Fees page. Processing charges are additional, and the agency notes that fees may change. Check the current fee and total at checkout before buying.

What the announced fee change means

On August 21, 2026, TWRA announced that the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission had approved fee proposals, citing a change in the resident annual hunt/fish combination from $33 to $42. The announcement does not give an effective date. The TWRA fee page currently lists $33, so $42 should not be treated as the current charge unless a newer official schedule or checkout confirms that it has taken effect.

Do you need a Tennessee fishing license?

In general, anyone taking or attempting to take fish needs a valid license. TWRA exempts residents and nonresidents under age 13; anglers ages 13–15 have junior options, with different resident and nonresident prices. Qualifying Tennessee residents fishing on their own farmland may also be exempt under the agency’s ownership and residency rules. Review the TWRA licensing rules for eligibility and documentation before relying on an exemption.

  • TWRA requires a Social Security Number to purchase a Tennessee hunting or fishing license under federal law.
  • The agency recognizes certain special residency categories, including some active-duty military households and qualifying students; documentation and conditions vary.

When trout changes the price

For residents, trout coverage generally requires the $21 annual trout supplement in addition to an eligible base license, such as the annual combination, county-of-residence license, or a one-day fishing license without trout. Nonresidents can instead choose an all-species license for the duration they need; those listed options include trout.

  • Applicable TWRA lakes: a lake permit is listed at $6 per day or $48 annually.
  • Gatlinburg: the one-day Gatlinburg trout license is listed at $11.

Requirements depend on the water, the angler’s age, and licenses already held. Confirm the rules for the exact location with TWRA before fishing.
