Recent public auction results range from $1,406,250 to $16,492,000, but those figures apply to different Pikachu Illustrator cards, grades and sale terms—not to every copy. Heritage Auctions reported the lower amount for a PSA Mint 9 in March 2026; Guinness World Records lists the higher amount for a PSA Gem Mint 10 sold through Goldin Auctions in February 2026, including buyer’s premium. A separate PSA 9 with a Gold Diamond enhancement sold for $5 million at Heritage in September 2026. These are dated comparisons, not an appraisal of your card.
Recent Pikachu Illustrator auction prices
The reported results show how much grade and special designation can matter. The two Heritage sales were both PSA 9 cards, but the September example carried a Gold Diamond enhancement. Goldin’s record-setting example was PSA 10. Those differences mean the results are not interchangeable comparisons.
| Sale | Reported result | What was sold |
|---|---|---|
| Heritage Auctions, March 27, 2026 | $1,406,250 | PSA Mint 9. Heritage said it set a public auction record for that grade at the time. Heritage’s sale report. |
| Goldin Auctions, February 2026 | $16,492,000 | PSA Gem Mint 10. Guinness World Records says this total includes buyer’s premium and listed it as the auction record at the time of its update. Guinness World Records. |
| Heritage Auctions, September 18–19, 2026 | $5,000,000 | PSA Mint 9 with a Mike Baker Authenticated Gold Diamond enhancement. Heritage described it as the highest PSA 9 Illustrator price and second-highest Pokémon-card auction price at the time. Heritage’s sale report. |
Price totals can use different conventions. Guinness explicitly says its $16,492,000 figure includes buyer’s premium; the cited Heritage releases report their respective auction results. Do not assume a reported figure is a seller’s net proceeds or a guaranteed price for another copy.
Why the Pikachu Illustrator is valuable
The Pikachu Illustrator is a Japanese Pokémon promotional card from 1998, awarded through an illustration contest rather than sold as a regular pack card. The Associated Press reports that Atsuko Nishida designed it for the contest and that only a few dozen copies are believed to exist. Heritage describes the card as the grand prize of one of the first three illustration contests publicized in CoroCoro Comic. The Associated Press’s February 16, 2026 report.

Scarcity alone does not determine a particular card’s price. The PSA Gem Mint 10 sale is tied to a specific card and grade; Guinness identifies it as the only known copy at that grade. That record should not be applied to a lower-graded card, an ungraded card, or an item whose identity and provenance have not been confirmed.

How to estimate what a specific copy may be worth
- Confirm the card’s identity and documentation. PSA’s certificate record identifies its referenced example as a 1998 Japanese promo Pikachu Holo Illustrator and provides a certification number. A certificate lookup can help verify a graded card’s record, but the cited sources do not establish a complete forensic method for detecting every counterfeit or alteration.
- Compare like with like. Start with the same grading company and grade. Then account for any additional designation, such as the Gold Diamond enhancement on Heritage’s $5 million PSA 9. A PSA 10 result is not a direct comparable for a PSA 9 or ungraded copy.
- Check the sale date and what the total represents. Record whether a figure is an auction result, a buyer total that includes premium, or a private-sale amount. The cited Guinness record explicitly includes buyer’s premium.
- Use population data as a dated snapshot, not a price formula. For its referenced certificate, PSA shows a Mint 9 population of 15, with one card graded higher. PSA CardFacts also provides population counts by grade and warns that census information can change as cards are graded or discovered. See PSA CardFacts.
- Seek a current, copy-specific assessment before a transaction. The auction reports do not establish the condition, authenticity, provenance or negotiated terms of a reader’s card. A dated public result is useful context, not an offer or guaranteed valuation.
