In the U.S., a practical customary tip for a day-spa massage or other treatment is 15–20% of the service price. That means $15–$20 on a $100 treatment. It is etiquette guidance, not a required rate: check the spa’s policy and bill before deciding what to add.
Typical tipping guidance by spa type

The 15–20% range is a useful day-spa reference, not a rule for every kind of establishment. Check the specific spa’s policy, especially when a service charge or automatic gratuity appears on the bill.
How to work out what to leave
- Check the treatment price. Use the service price as the base for the day-spa 15–20% guidance.
- Look for a service charge or gratuity. Read the bill rather than assuming an added fee is—or is not—a tip.
- Ask what an unclear charge covers. If the bill does not say whether it reaches the therapist, ask the spa before tipping again.
- Choose an amount that fits the service and your budget. The customary range is guidance, not an obligation.
What surveys say about massage tipping
Zenoti’s article “2025 Survey: The state of tipping in salons,” published June 6, 2025, reports a survey of 900 U.S. guests and 100 stylists. Its reported massage-tip response bands were:

These are the survey’s reported bands, not a prescribed rate or a measure of what every spa client tips. Zenoti also reports that 36% of guests tip less when they see a service fee and 24% had mistaken a service fee or “wellness charge” for a tip. That makes checking the bill’s meaning worthwhile.

Where the guidance applies
The customary range and survey figures here are U.S.-framed. The available sources do not establish a universal international rate, so travelers elsewhere should check local practice and the spa’s own policy.
Separately, the International SPA Association’s 2025 Consumer Snapshot surveyed 1,000 U.S. respondents from December 9–20, 2024. Its March 27, 2025 announcement says 85% of spa-goers viewed spa visits as self-care and nearly two-thirds named stress reduction as a reason for visiting. Those findings describe spa-going context; they do not establish a tipping percentage.
