What you may pay beyond the license fee
Habitat stamp
Anglers age 18 or older generally need a habitat stamp when buying a fishing license. The fee is $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents, and no more than one stamp is required per license year. One-day fishing licenses and youth licenses are among the listed exceptions. Check the applicable rule for your license type and age before calculating your total. Online or agent fee
GFP says an agent or online fee of up to $4 may apply per fishing license sold or replaced. The fee schedule flags certain prices as subject to an agent fee, so the listed license amount is not necessarily the amount due at checkout. Confirm your final total in the state purchase portal.

State-mandated surcharge
Some 2026 fees listed in the resident handbook already include a $6 surcharge required by state law. The handbook says the proceeds support hunting access, wildlife damage management, and animal damage control programs. Do not add another $6 to a listed price that already includes it. Which license should you choose?
- Fishing for a single day? The resident one-day license is $10; the nonresident one is $26. Both are exempt from the habitat stamp.
- Visiting for several days? A nonresident can choose a one-day, three-consecutive-day, or annual license. The three-day option costs $45 before any applicable stamp or purchase fee.
- A South Dakota resident age 65 or older? The resident senior annual option is $17. If you are 18 or older, the habitat-stamp rules generally still apply.
- Buying for a child? Resident youth under 18 do not need a fishing license. Nonresident youth under 18 also do not need one if they fish on their own or keep their own limit.
Resident and nonresident prices differ, so use South Dakota’s residency definitions rather than assuming that property ownership, frequent visits, or a mailing address alone qualifies you for resident rates. The fee schedule distinguishes the two categories. GFP 2026 fee schedule
