The Wall Street Journal’s account describes Elon Musk’s longtime aide Jared Birchall as an intermediary in family logistics, privacy and financial discussions involving women raising Musk’s children. Its opening example is Ashley St. Clair’s effort to establish paternity and her request for a paternity test through Birchall. The reporting offers a view into one case, not a complete or independently verified account of Musk’s family arrangements.
What the WSJ says Birchall does
The WSJ identifies Birchall as Musk’s longtime fixer and family-office manager. In the article’s opening, St. Clair contacts him to request a paternity test. The WSJ describes Birchall as handling financial and privacy arrangements relating to women raising Musk’s children, and reports that he discussed those matters with St. Clair during a two-hour phone call in December. The account does not establish that every family relationship or arrangement is managed in the same way.
As quoted by the WSJ, St. Clair said, “I don’t want my son to feel like he’s a secret.” The newspaper also attributes to Birchall a warning that legal recourse “always, always leads to a worse outcome for that woman than what it would have been otherwise.” These are statements as reported by the WSJ, not independently recorded dialogue presented here.
What was reported about money and privacy
TechCrunch’s April 15, 2025 summary of the WSJ investigation said St. Clair was allegedly offered $15 million and monthly payments of $100,000 until the child turned 21 in exchange for silence. That is a reported allegation in TechCrunch’s summary, not a confirmed contract or a settled fact: TechCrunch’s account.

The available account does not establish the terms of any completed agreement, whether the reported proposal was accepted, or a comprehensive set of financial arrangements. It therefore supports describing the reported role of an intermediary and the allegation about one proposal, but not treating either as a universal system.
How many children does Musk have?
TechCrunch reported that 14 children were already known when its summary appeared on April 15, 2025, and said the WSJ investigation suggested the number could be higher. What the reporting establishes—and what it does not
The reporting describes Birchall’s involvement in one account of paternity, privacy and money, and relays claims about a proposed payment arrangement. It does not provide an independent audit of Musk’s family, verify a current number of children, or establish that the reported proposal was finalized. The WSJ article’s available opening and TechCrunch’s brief summary are not a full inventory of the investigation’s findings.
