For a practical U.S. benchmark, 2024 Atlantic bluefin ex-vessel averages used by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in 2026 rulemaking ranged from $5.77 to $7.46 per pound. A 243 kg (535 lb) bluefin sold for ¥510.3 million at Tokyo’s 5 January 2026 New Year auction, but that exceptional auction result is not a normal dockside price.
What does “a large tuna” mean for pricing?
“Large tuna” is not a species or a pricing category. A 500-pound bluefin sold at a special auction, a tuna landed by a commercial fisher, and tuna portions sold to consumers are different products at different stages of the market.
The first question is what kind of value you mean:
- Ex-vessel value: the gross amount a fisher receives when the catch is sold at landing.
- Wholesale or retail value: prices further down the supply chain; they should not be substituted for the fisher’s sale price.
- Auction price: a result from a particular sale, which may reflect unusual competition or tradition rather than an ordinary market rate.
NOAA says bluefin value varies with demand, quantity, and quality. Special first-fish traditions and commercial marketing can also affect prices. The agency cautions that “the million-dollar price tags occasionally reported are far from the norm.” NOAA’s Atlantic bluefin overview provides that context.
What are ordinary U.S. Atlantic bluefin benchmarks?
NMFS used the following 2024 average ex-vessel prices in its 2026 federal quota revenue estimates. These are category averages in U.S. dollars per pound—not guaranteed offers for an individual fish.

| Atlantic bluefin category | 2024 average ex-vessel price |
|---|---|
| General | $5.92 per lb |
| Harpoon | $5.77 per lb |
| Longline | $7.46 per lb |
| Pelagic longline bycatch set-aside | $7.46 per lb |
| Trap | $6.12 per lb |
The figures come from NMFS’s 2026 Atlantic bluefin quota specifications. They offer a rough gross-value reference for those specific categories and year. They do not establish a grade-specific price or predict what a particular fish will sell for.
How much would a 500-pound tuna be worth?
For a rough illustration only, multiplying 500 lb by the 2024 Atlantic bluefin category averages above gives a gross value of about $2,885 to $3,730, depending on category. That arithmetic assumes the full 500 lb is the relevant sale weight and that the fish receives the applicable category average. It is not an appraisal or buyer’s quote.

Before using a per-pound figure, check that the comparison matches the fish’s species, region, year, sale stage, weight basis, and quality. A scale can establish weight, but it cannot determine grade or what a buyer will offer. NMFS also notes that its available data do not account for costs such as fuel, bait, and ice, so its gross estimates cannot be treated as net income or profit.
What did the 2026 Tokyo auction tuna sell for?
At Toyosu’s first auction on 5 January 2026, a 243 kg (535 lb) bluefin from Oma sold for ¥510.3 million. Guinness World Records lists the sale as the record result. The Associated Press reports that New Year auction prices are significantly higher than usual, so this is a special auction outcome—not a sensible per-pound benchmark for an ordinary landed tuna. The AP’s account of the auction explains that seasonal context.

How does Pacific bluefin compare?
NOAA Fisheries reports that U.S. commercial Pacific bluefin landings in 2024 totaled 300,000 lb and $1.7 million. Dividing those fleet-wide totals gives an implied average of about $5.67 per lb. That is an arithmetic average across the reported landings, not a separately published grade-specific price or a quote for an individual fish. See NOAA Fisheries’ commercial landings data.
Size alone does not determine value. NOAA gives an average adult Pacific bluefin weight of about 60 kg and a maximum reported weight of 450 kg. Those biological figures do not provide a price formula; the fish’s market, quality, and buyer still matter. NOAA’s Pacific bluefin species page describes its size range.

Why a headline price is not a fisher’s take-home amount
A reported sale price is not automatically the seller’s profit. Ex-vessel figures describe gross sale value, while expenses reduce what remains. NMFS says the cost information needed to calculate net revenue—including costs such as gas, bait, and ice—is not available in its analysis. Downstream wholesale, restaurant, or retail prices also belong to different points in the supply chain.
For historical context only, NOAA reported estimated U.S. Atlantic bluefin commercial revenue of $9.6 million at an average $6.45 per lb in 2017. Those dated figures are not a current quote. NOAA’s Atlantic bluefin overview gives the historical context and notes that value varies with market conditions.

If you caught a tuna, check the applicable rules separately
In U.S. commercial Atlantic bluefin fisheries, NOAA’s rules page updated 7 October 2026 lists a 73-inch curved fork length minimum for relevant categories, along with category-specific retention limits and permit requirements. Curved fork length follows the body’s curve from the tip of the upper jaw to the fork of the tail. Rules vary by fishery and can change; they determine what may be retained, not what the fish is worth. Consult NOAA’s Atlantic bluefin commercial fishery information for current details.
