The most expensive tuna sold at auction fetched ¥510,300,000—about US$3.2 million—at Tokyo’s Toyosu Market on January 5, 2026. It was a bluefin tuna caught off Ōma, Japan, and bought by Sushizanmai, the chain operated by Kiyomura Corporation.
What made the tuna worth ¥510.3 million?
The sale was the top bid at Toyosu’s annual first fish auction of the year, a high-profile event where buyers compete for prized fish and publicity. Guinness World Records lists the ¥510.3 million sale as the current auction record. The auction price reflects that unusual event and its promotional value, not the ordinary market price of tuna.
Hundreds of tuna are auctioned at Toyosu on a typical day, and prices for Ōma tuna rise significantly at the celebratory New Year auction, according to the Associated Press. The record fish was later served as sushi; Guinness reports that the sushi was sold at regular prices.

Why the record is not the price of ordinary tuna
A record-setting first-auction bid is an exceptional purchase tied to a symbolic New Year event and the attention it attracts. It should not be used as a guide to grocery-store tuna, restaurant sushi, or the usual price of Ōma fish. The record tuna itself was reportedly served as sushi at regular prices after the auction, according to Guinness World Records.
