How did John Coates become Stoke City’s owner?
Stoke City Holdings’ accounts state that “On 8 July 2024 Stoke City Holdings Limited and its subsidiaries were demerged from bet365 Group Limited to John Coates.” The company’s accounts provide the clearest description of the transfer: Stoke City Holdings’ accounts.
Companies House records John Fitzgerald Coates as holding at least 75% of Stoke City Holdings’ shares and voting rights, with the change effective 8 July 2024. BBC Sport described him as becoming the club’s outright owner after the demerger. These records establish his control of the company; they are not a valuation of his personal assets.
What was the relationship between bet365 and Stoke City?
The demerger followed a longstanding financial relationship between the club and bet365. BBC Sport reported football finance expert Kieran Maguire’s view that bet365 was effectively writing off money owed by Stoke City. Maguire said the debt had at one stage exceeded a quarter of a billion pounds, describing the change as “tidying up.” That is his characterization of the transaction as reported by the BBC, not evidence of Coates’s personal wealth: BBC Sport’s report.

Legal entities in the club structure should not be confused with the individuals who control them. Companies House separately lists John Coates and Peter Coates as people with significant influence or control at Stoke City (Property) Limited, and records Stoke City Holdings as holding at least 75% of that company’s shares: Companies House records for Stoke City (Property) Limited.
Is John Coates worth £3.2 billion?
The exact £3.2 billion estimate is not verified by the available evidence. No traceable original publisher, valuation date or methodology for that figure is established here, and no personal breakdown of Coates’s assets and liabilities is available in the cited records. It should therefore be treated as an unverified estimate, not a confirmed net-worth figure.

Stoke City’s accounts, its ownership records and its financial results cannot fill that gap. A club’s profit, debt or company ownership is not the same as an individual’s net worth, which would require evidence about the person’s assets and liabilities. The ownership change does not establish that Coates personally received or owns a particular amount.

BBC Sport reported that Stoke City made £60.8 million profit before tax for the year ending 31 May 2025: BBC Sport’s report on the club’s result. This is a dated result for the club, not an estimate of John Coates’s personal wealth. It should not be used to validate the £3.2 billion claim.
