Public company and club records document those business routes and the clubs’ ownership events, but they do not establish a verified personal fortune for any of them.
How John Coates’s wealth is linked to bet365
Stoke City’s ownership has been associated with the Coates family for decades. BBC Sport reports that the family became majority shareholders in the 1980s and again in 2006, when the bet365 group bought the club from an Icelandic consortium: BBC Sport’s account.
A later corporate event clarified the connection between the club and John Coates. Stoke City Holdings’ accounts state that the holding company and its subsidiaries were demerged from bet365 Group Limited to Coates on 8 July 2024. Companies House records him as holding more than 75% of Stoke City Holdings Limited: Companies House records.
These records document a business connection and a transfer of the club holding company. They do not state Coates’s personal net worth, and the holding company’s ownership percentage should not be treated as a measure of his personal fortune.

How Carol and Kevin Shanahan built their business
Carol and Kevin Shanahan founded Synectics Solutions in 1992. Port Vale describes the company as a fintech business providing predictive analytics and data services to finance, insurance and government departments in the UK, Canada and the United States: Port Vale’s owner profile.
The club’s 2020 profile says Carol began her career as a mainframe computer operator, later chaired Synectics Solutions and left school without formal qualifications. Those biographical details are attributed to the club’s profile: Port Vale’s profile of Carol Shanahan.

How the Shanahans acquired Port Vale and Vale Park
Port Vale announced on 7 May 2019 that Carol and Kevin Shanahan had completed the purchase of the club. It said Vale Park was bought in its entirety as part of the transaction: Port Vale’s 7 May 2019 statement.
That announcement records the acquisition, not the Shanahans’ personal earnings from Synectics Solutions or the amount they paid for the club. Carol described Vale Park as “the family home” and said they wanted it to be in the best condition possible for visiting supporters. The statement also quoted Kevin describing the occasion as “a humbling and magnificent feeling.”

What the public record does—and does not—show about their fortunes
The documented routes differ: Coates’s wealth is associated with the Coates family’s bet365 business, while the Shanahans’ business background is Synectics Solutions. The available club and company records do not provide verified personal net-worth figures for either route. Company revenues, assets, shareholdings and club transactions are not interchangeable with an individual’s net worth, so they cannot establish a reliable fortune figure on their own.
There is also a current corporate-control qualification for Port Vale. Companies House filing history records that Carol and Kevin Shanahan ceased to be persons with significant control of Port Vale Football Club (Holdings) Limited on 26 January 2026, while Port Vale Football Club (Finance) Limited became a person with significant control from that date: Companies House filing history. This records a change in registered control structure; it does not identify the new entity’s ultimate beneficial owners or explain why the change occurred.
