There is no single reliable price for a Thailand trip: your total depends on airfare, dates, number of nights, destinations, lodging, and what you plan to do. Build your estimate from your own itinerary: add actual round-trip airfare and other upfront costs to lodging for every night, daily spending, any intercity or island transfers, and a contingency. Keep entry proof-of-funds separate from the money you expect to spend.
How to calculate a Thailand trip budget
Start with costs tied to your specific trip, rather than applying a generic daily figure to every traveler. A practical worksheet is:
- Round-trip airfare: Use a live quote for your departure city and travel dates. No route-specific airfare is established here, so a meaningful flight estimate cannot be supplied without those details.
- Lodging: Multiply the date-specific nightly rate you would actually book by the number of nights. Compare the same occupancy, location, taxes and fees, and cancellation terms.
- Daily spending: Estimate food, local transport, attractions, mobile data, and incidental purchases according to your own plans.
- Route-specific costs: Add intercity travel, island boat transfers, and national park charges where relevant.
- Other costs: Include any travel insurance you choose, cash-access charges, and a contingency you set for yourself. Insurance is a relevant optional budget line, not a price that can be estimated without a policy and trip details.
Use the totals in your home currency only after checking the exchange rate and fees that will apply to your card or bank. A planning conversion published by Visit-Thailand.org on 1 October 2026 was approximately US$30 per ฿1,000; it is not a guaranteed rate. The European Central Bank says its reference rates are for information and strongly discourages their use for transactions (ECB reference rates).
Why lodging and destination can change the total
Hotel-market averages provide context, not a quote for a particular property or booking date. Knight Frank data reported by The Nation for H1 2026 showed these average daily rates:

| Market and hotel group | Average daily rate | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok, midscale hotels | ฿2,151 | H1 2026 market average reported by The Nation from Knight Frank data |

| Bangkok, luxury hotels | ฿7,010 | H1 2026 average reported by The Nation from Knight Frank data |
| Phuket, all surveyed hotels | ฿7,117 | H1 2026 average across surveyed hotels reported by The Nation from Knight Frank data |
These are hotel averages, not rates for hostels, guesthouses, every hotel, or your dates. For the reported market figures and their context, see The Nation’s report of Knight Frank’s H1 2026 hotel data. Visit-Thailand.org notes that hotel prices vary seasonally and its hotel benchmarks do not cover hostels or guesthouses (Thailand daily cost guide). An island itinerary can also add boat fares and park fees; include those separately rather than assuming the lodging average captures them.
What daily spending and individual activities add
Food, local transport, paid sights, tours, and nightlife depend on your choices and itinerary. The Tourism Authority of Thailand FAQ uses the question “How much should I budget per day?”, but its answer text is not available at the cited page, so it does not establish a current official per-day recommendation (TAT money FAQ).
For historical context only, the National Statistical Office of Thailand recorded average international tourist expenditure of ฿4,129 per person per day and an average stay of 10.8 days in its 2023 data, published in 2025. Those are national historical averages, not a forecast or recommended budget for your trip (Thai Economic Indicators 2025, Table 8.1).
Some individual prices can be budgeted once your itinerary is known. The Grand Palace lists a ฿500 admission for foreign visitors, including Wat Phra Kaew and the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textile (Grand Palace visitor information). A cost guide dated 1 October 2026 lists Wat Pho at ฿300, the Chao Phraya Express Boat Orange Line at ฿18, Don Mueang airport buses at ฿30 or ฿50 depending on route, and the SRT Red Line at ฿12–42. These fares and fees can change; check the relevant operator or venue close to travel.

Cash withdrawals
The 1 October 2026 cost guide reports a foreign-card ATM fee of ฿250–350 for specified banks and cards. Your home bank may add its own charge, and the ATM fee can change, so verify both before relying on that figure. If you expect to withdraw cash more than once, include the likely fees in your estimate rather than treating them as part of everyday purchases.
Mobile data
Mobile connectivity is a separate trip cost. AIS publishes tourist SIM and plan information; check current plan details and confirm that your device supports the service you intend to use (AIS tourist plans).

Dates and route
Rates depend on dates and destination. Compare actual lodging options for the same nights, and price transfers for the specific route. There is no basis here for naming one month or route as always cheapest.

Money you may be asked to demonstrate at entry is not a trip-cost estimate. A Thai government visitor reminder updated 7 July 2026 lists ฿20,000 per person or ฿40,000 per family for a Tourist Visa and says visa-exemption travelers should check the guidance applicable to their nationality and departure point. The reminder states: “The final decision on entry into Thailand rests with Immigration Bureau officers at the entry checkpoint.” Review the current official guidance for your category and circumstances (THAILAND.GO.TH entry reminder).

Turn the worksheet into your own total
- Choose your dates, number of nights, and the cities or islands you will visit.
- Get a round-trip airfare quote from your actual origin for those dates.
- Price lodging for the same dates and room occupancy, including taxes and fees.
- Set a daily amount for food, local transport, attractions, mobile data, and incidental spending that reflects your plans.
- Add intercity fares, boat transfers, park charges, cash-access fees, and any insurance you choose.
- Add a contingency that suits your tolerance for unexpected costs, then convert the total using a current rate and your payment provider’s fees.
A guidebook can help with offline planning, routes, and itinerary ideas, but it cannot replace date-specific fare and lodging checks. Lonely Planet’s 2026 Thailand guidebook lists itineraries, maps, transport, and money guidance in its contents (Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook).
