A widely circulated estimate puts his reported compensation at $500,000 for Iron Man and as much as $75 million for several later films—but the larger totals may include backend participation, not just salary, and some figures are disputed.
Reported pay by Marvel movie
The table below lists figures from Celebrity Net Worth’s film-by-film estimate list. They are secondary estimates, not confirmed contract disclosures or audited payout records. Where another report offers useful context, it is noted alongside the estimate.
| Marvel movie | Reported estimate | What the figure means or what is disputed |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Man (2008) | $500,000 | Celebrity Net Worth estimate; no contract disclosure is established by the cited reporting. Celebrity Net Worth |
| Iron Man 2 (2010) | $10 million | Consistent with The Guardian’s account that a six-film agreement made before this movie raised Downey’s basic salary to $10 million per film while retaining incentives. The Guardian |
| The Avengers (2012) | $50 million | Celebrity Net Worth describes this as $10 million base pay plus $40 million backend. Downey’s response to being asked about the $50 million figure was “Yeah,” according to the estimate page, which reproduces his GQ interview response. Celebrity Net Worth |
| Iron Man 3 (2013) | $75 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate; it is not established as a confirmed or audited total. Celebrity Net Worth |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) | $40 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate; no corroborating primary contract record is provided in the cited reporting. Celebrity Net Worth |
| Captain America: Civil War (2016) | $40 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate. The Guardian says Downey’s appearances in this film and Spider-Man: Homecoming appeared to fall outside his earlier six-film deal. Celebrity Net Worth · The Guardian |
| Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) | $15 million | The Guardian described this as a rumoured fee for three days’ work, not a confirmed disclosure. The Guardian |
| Avengers: Infinity War (2018) | $75 million | The Guardian relayed The Hollywood Reporter’s report of at least $75 million, but also cited a competing estimate of about $20 million. The estimates differ in how they account for backend compensation. The Guardian |
| Avengers: Endgame (2019) | $75 million | One estimate comprises a $20 million salary plus an estimated $55 million backend payment. The Guardian also reported a competing estimate of about $20 million. Neither is an official Marvel disclosure. ComicBook.com · The Guardian |
Why reports give different numbers
Salary is not the same as total compensation
A base salary is the amount paid upfront for the work. A reported total may also include bonuses or backend participation tied to a film’s financial performance. The Guardian reported that Downey’s six-film agreement, made before Iron Man 2, set a basic salary of $10 million per film while retaining incentives. That base figure should not be mistaken for his total compensation on every movie covered by the deal.
Backend estimates are especially uncertain
For Infinity War, The Guardian relayed a report that Downey received at least $75 million, with a base estimated at $10 million and profit participation commonly thought to be around 2.5%. The same article documented a competing estimate of about $20 million for Infinity War and a similar amount for Endgame. ComicBook.com separately estimated Endgame compensation at $20 million in salary plus $55 million in backend. These are differing reports, not a settled accounting of what was paid.

Not every appearance has a reliable public figure
The commonly listed film-by-film estimates do not cover every Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance. The cited material does not establish a reliable salary for Downey’s appearance in The Incredible Hulk or a reconciled figure for all brief cameos. A salary reported for one movie or deal should not be carried over to another appearance without evidence.

Not reliably from these figures. The estimates mix base salary and possible backend compensation, differ on what certain films paid, and leave some appearances unaccounted for. Adding them together would create a precise-looking total without establishing that the underlying numbers use consistent definitions or cover the same set of films.

The strongest reading is therefore film-specific: use the table as a guide to commonly reported estimates, and treat the larger totals—particularly for the Avengers films—as disputed rather than confirmed pay.
