Published estimates put a typical new Airbus A320neo and Boeing 737 MAX 8 at roughly the same rent: about $400,000 per month in an IBA estimate reported in January 2025. That is a market benchmark, not a live quote or guaranteed contract price. The figures available here do not establish comparable 2026 rates.
How much do Airbus and Boeing narrowbodies cost to lease?
Aircraft lease rates are monthly rents paid by an airline or other operator to lease an aircraft; they are not purchase prices or passenger fares. The closest like-for-like comparison in the published estimates is between typical-specification new-generation models:

IBA head of valuations Mike Yeomans told Airfinance Global: “We’re currently around $400,000 per month for either of those aircraft for a typical specification, and in January there may be a bit of an uptick.” The aircraft he meant were the A320neo and 737 MAX 8. The report does not turn that estimate into a firm offer or specify that every lease has identical terms. Airfinance Global, January 8, 2025.
What do other published estimates say?
Other reports give useful context, but their figures should not be combined into a single rate card: they cover different dates, sources, and potentially different valuation methods or aircraft specifications.

The April 2025 MAX 8 and A320neo figures are higher than the January 2025 estimates above. That difference is a reason to keep the dates and publishers attached to each number, not to assume one is a correction or that either is a current quote. How do used narrowbody lease rates compare?
For a five-to-six-year placement and a medium-tier credit, Yeomans put an A321 at about $275,000 per month and 10-year-old 737-800s and A320s at about $250,000 per month in the January 2025 Airfinance Global report. Those conditions matter: the figures are not universal rates for any aircraft of those types, and the A321 figure should not be read as a new-aircraft estimate. Airfinance Global, January 8, 2025.

IBA’s October 2024 comparison also found that rates for 10-year-old 737-800s and A320ceos had risen about 35% and 42%, respectively, from October 2023. The increase shows why age alone does not guarantee a low rent: used-aircraft pricing can rise when aircraft are scarce.
Why can two lease quotes differ?
The model is only one part of the comparison. Before treating one offer as cheaper, check whether the quoted aircraft and lease terms actually match on these points:

- Model and subvariant: An A320neo, A321neo, A321LR, 737 MAX 8, A320ceo, and 737-800 are not interchangeable benchmarks.
- Age and condition: A new aircraft and a 10-year-old aircraft belong in separate comparisons.
- Cabin and equipment: Interior configuration matters; the reported A321LR figure above $500,000 per month was for a long-haul interior.
- Delivery timing and market: Availability can affect the terms for an aircraft delivered now versus one placed later.
- Lease duration and extensions: A quote for a five-to-six-year placement is tied to a different commitment from a shorter or longer lease.
- Lessee credit: The reported used-aircraft figures were associated with medium-tier credit, not every operator’s credit profile.
- Maintenance and return conditions: Compare maintenance responsibilities, required return condition, and transition obligations rather than looking at rent alone.
Market conditions affect supply and financing as well as airline demand. SMBC Aviation Capital’s March 2024 whitepaper identified interest rates, OEM production and quality issues, financing liquidity, airline demand, lessor business plans, and secondary-market supply as factors bearing on rates. It said constraints on new aircraft increased demand for lease extensions and secondary leases, putting pressure on available aircraft. Airfinance Journal’s 2024 investor poll similarly connected strength in used aircraft with supply-chain problems affecting new deliveries and reported that lessors were sold out for coming years. It described A321neo leases starting around $400,000 per month and secondary 737-800 estimates that varied by age. These are reported market indications, not standardized prices. How to use these figures when comparing offers
- Start with the closest model match. For a new, typical-specification A320neo versus 737 MAX 8, the January 2025 IBA estimate is about $400,000 per month for each.
- Match the aircraft details. Record subvariant, age, cabin configuration, equipment, and delivery timing for both offers.
- Match the commercial terms. Compare lease length, extension rights, lessee credit assumptions, maintenance duties, return conditions, and transition obligations.
- Keep each estimate tied to its source and date. The January 2025 IBA estimate and the April 2025 figures relayed by The State of Aviation are not a single contemporaneous price list.
- Ask for a quote on the actual placement. Published estimates can orient a comparison, but they do not establish the rent, fees, or obligations available to a particular operator.
The newest numeric observation among these reports is the April 2025 data relayed by The State of Aviation 2025; the most directly comparable typical-specification Airbus-versus-Boeing estimate is from January 2025. Neither establishes current 2026 rates.
