Re:

How Much Does the Super Bowl Cost to Run?

Santa Clara’s $6,216,760 estimate covers city support services for Super Bowl LX—not the full cost of running the event across all stakeholders.

There is no established public figure for the full cost of running a Super Bowl across the NFL, host venues, local governments and private businesses. The clearest recent benchmark is Santa Clara’s January 1, 2026 estimate of $6,216,760 for the city’s support services for Super Bowl LX. That is a municipal-services estimate, not the NFL’s event budget or an all-in Super Bowl total.

What Santa Clara’s $6.2 million estimate covers

The City of Santa Clara’s estimate for Super Bowl LX totals $6,216,760 and is divided into three categories:

Category Estimated amount
Event planning and training $953,469
Required event equipment $215,545
Event deployment, including a 20% staffing contingency $5,047,746
Total $6,216,760

These amounts are the city’s projected costs for providing Super Bowl support services, based on an estimate updated January 1, 2026. They do not combine the NFL’s game production costs, stadium or host-committee spending, regional services, or spending by teams, broadcasters, vendors and sponsors. Santa Clara’s major-events information tracks city and Stadium Authority costs and reimbursements.

Who pays the city’s qualifying costs?

Under the Super Bowl LX League Event Agreement summary published by Santa Clara, the Bay Area Host Committee is responsible for reimbursing the city for qualifying actual and reasonable costs incurred in providing Super Bowl services. The covered categories include planning and training, event expenses, required equipment and miscellaneous or unexpected expenses. Because reimbursement is tied to qualifying actual costs, the $6,216,760 estimate is not necessarily a cap on what the host committee may owe, nor is it a final reconciled bill. The city’s agreement summary and cost information describe the reimbursement framework.

Santa Clara also reported about $124,086 in Super Bowl LX planning costs incurred before reimbursement agreements were in place. The city says those early costs may be covered by surplus government funding after the host committee’s obligations are met; otherwise, they are allocated to the Stadium Authority. The figure is a reported amount at that stage, not the event’s final public cost.

Why there is no single public “cost to run” figure

“Cost to run the Super Bowl” can mean several different things: the NFL’s event production and game operations, stadium and host-committee operations, local and regional public services, or the combined spending of private participants. The available Santa Clara figure answers only the municipal-support-services question. It does not establish a consolidated total across all public and private stakeholders.

When comparing host-city figures, match the scope and accounting stage. Check whether the number is an estimate or final reconciled spending, whether it includes planning and equipment as well as event-day deployment, and whether it represents costs incurred or reimbursements received. A municipal services estimate cannot stand in for the full event budget.

Operating cost is not economic impact

Economic-impact estimates measure associated activity, such as visitor and vendor spending; they are not bills for operating the game. A 2025 study by Louisiana State University’s Center for Economics, Business, and Policy Research estimated $658.4 million in combined visitor and vendor spending for Super Bowl LIX in Louisiana. That figure describes spending associated with the event, not the cost of running it. The LSU Center for Economics, Business, and Policy Research publishes its economic-impact work.

What historical host-city figures can—and cannot—show

An Associated Press report published by NFL.com said Indianapolis’s sports and convention board reported a $1.1 million net loss from hosting and $3.6 million spent on police and fire protection. These are historical local-agency figures for that event, not a current Super Bowl budget or a directly comparable all-in cost. The AP report published by NFL.com provides that historical example.
