YouTube Shorts has no fixed payment per view. YouTube combines Shorts Feed ad revenue into a pool, allocates it among eligible creators based on their share of engaged views in each country, and pays creators 45% of their allocation. A 2026 third-party sample reported Shorts RPMs from $0.163 to $0.328 per 1,000 views across five audience countries, but those are sample estimates—not official rates or a promise of what your channel will earn.
How Shorts earnings are calculated
YouTube’s Shorts ad-sharing system is a pool, not a direct payment for each view. Ads appear between videos in the Shorts Feed, and revenue is pooled monthly. YouTube accounts for music licensing and allocates the Creator Pool according to eligible engaged Shorts views from monetizing creators in each country. A creator’s share depends on their portion of those views in the country, not simply their total view count.
YouTube then pays the creator 45% of their allocated amount. That 45% applies to the allocation from the Creator Pool—not to all Shorts ad revenue before music licensing and allocation. YouTube says the creator share percentage does not change depending on whether music was used. Its Shorts monetization policy explains the calculation.
How music affects the pool
When a Short uses music made available or claimed by YouTube music partners, part of the revenue associated with its engaged views may go toward music licensing before the Creator Pool is allocated. In YouTube’s examples, one music track sends half of the associated revenue to the Creator Pool; two tracks send one third. These examples describe the pool calculation, not a deduction from the creator’s 45% share.

YouTube’s hypothetical example
YouTube illustrates the formula with a hypothetical country that generates $100,000 in Shorts Feed ad revenue. After the example’s music allocation, $90,000 goes to the Creator Pool. A creator with 1% of eligible engaged views in that country is allocated $900, then receives $405 after the 45% share. This is a worked illustration, not an observed rate or a forecast for a particular number of views.
What 2026 Shorts RPM estimates show
YouTube does not publish a universal Shorts RPM. AIR Media-Tech’s 2026 report analyzed YouTube Analytics data from 274 channels in 13 niches, covering 3,044 channel-month observations. Its reported country figures are from that vendor’s sample, not a representative census of creators or guaranteed rates. AIR defines these figures as revenue per 1,000 views:

| Audience country | AIR Media-Tech sample Shorts RPM |
|---|---|
| United States | $0.328 per 1,000 views |
| Australia | $0.193 per 1,000 views |
| United Kingdom | $0.166 per 1,000 views |
| Canada | $0.165 per 1,000 views |
| Germany | $0.163 per 1,000 views |
These differences suggest that audience geography can coincide with different RPM results, consistent with YouTube’s country-level allocation model. They do not establish what a creator based in one of these countries will earn: the figures describe audience-country results in AIR’s partner data. See AIR Media-Tech’s report for its findings and context.
AIR also reported Shorts RPMs at 3%–14% of long-form RPM in most sampled niches, with music as an exception. It estimated that 11,000–34,000 Shorts views could produce the same revenue as 1,000 long-form views in many cases. These are findings from its sample, not platform rules; the comparison can vary with niche, audience, eligible engaged views, music use, and the period measured.

Why view counts do not translate cleanly into income
Total views are not the same as eligible engaged views used in the allocation. Your result also depends on the country mix of those views, the revenue available in each country’s pool, music licensing, and whether the views qualify for sharing. That is why multiplying a public view count by an online RPM estimate can give a misleading result.
- Eligible engaged views: YouTube’s allocation uses eligible engaged Shorts views, not an unconditional payment for every view.
- Audience location: Creators receive a share of the Creator Pool in each country based on their share of eligible engaged views there.
- Music use: Music licensing can affect how much associated revenue enters the Creator Pool.
- View eligibility: YouTube identifies non-original Shorts, artificial or fake views, and views that do not meet advertiser-friendly rules as examples of ineligible views.
- Measurement: Check whether an estimate means Shorts RPM, long-form RPM, or total creator income. Shorts ad revenue does not include sponsorships, affiliate income, fan funding, or revenue from long-form videos.
Who can earn Shorts ad revenue
YouTube’s current Partner Program eligibility page lists two routes to apply for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP): 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the past 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days. YouTube reviews each applying channel and requires compliance with monetization policies and other listed requirements. Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour route. Check the YouTube Partner Program eligibility requirements for current details.

Being eligible for YPP is not enough by itself to receive Shorts Feed ad revenue. Monetizing partners must also accept the Shorts Monetization Module. Eligible views begin accruing for revenue sharing after acceptance; views earned before acceptance are not paid retroactively. YouTube describes this requirement and view eligibility in its Shorts monetization policy.
What changes on February 1, 2027
YouTube’s policy announces a future requirement effective February 1, 2027: creators will need at least 10 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days to earn monthly Shorts Creator Pool and YouTube Premium revenue. This is an announced change, not the rule currently in force for 2026. It is also distinct from the YPP application routes listed above.

For your own results, YouTube Analytics is more useful than a general RPM estimate. YouTube says estimated daily Shorts Feed ad revenue appears in Analytics when available, starting from the day Shorts ad monetization begins.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics.
- Review the revenue data for Shorts Feed ads. Availability begins from the day Shorts ad monetization starts, according to YouTube.
- Compare revenue with the same period’s eligible engaged views and audience geography before drawing conclusions from an RPM figure.
Your Analytics reflects the channel’s own eligible views and country distribution; an outside sample cannot predict those results.
