There is no single current figure for all Atlantic halibut fisheries. The latest available numbers refer to different stock areas, years and measures: Canadian landings in one area, Canadian catch limits or advice in others, and U.S. landings reported separately. Those figures should not be added together as if they were one Atlantic-wide total.

Landings are fish reported as caught and brought ashore; a total allowable catch (TAC) is a management limit, while scientific TAC advice is a recommendation used in setting a limit. A TAC or advice figure does not show how much was actually caught.
Why the numbers do not make one Atlantic total
The figures above differ in geography, time period and meaning. The 4,264-tonne Canadian figure is preliminary, applies to Maritimes landings, and excludes Newfoundland. The 5,064-tonne figure is advice for a future management season, not realized landings. The Gulf’s 3,468-tonne TAC covers a separate stock area and season. NOAA’s U.S. landings figure is for 2024 and is reported in pounds.
Adding these figures would mix actual landings with limits and advice, combine non-identical stock areas, and treat incomplete data as complete. To answer “how much is being fished?” precisely, specify the stock area, year or management season, and whether you mean landings or a catch limit.

Stock condition differs by fishery
Gulf of St. Lawrence
DFO’s 2025 assessment placed the 4RST stock in the healthy zone, with a probability of more than 99% that it was in that zone in 2024. The assessment describes landings rising from around 600 tonnes annually in the early 1960s to 91 tonnes in 1982, then reaching historic highs of about 2,000 tonnes in 2023 and 2024. It also reports increasing exploitable biomass since the 2000s. These findings apply to 4RST, not to every Atlantic halibut stock.
Scotian Shelf and southern Grand Banks
DFO’s 2025 update says stock status has remained well above BMSY, a reference point used in fisheries management. That statement concerns the 3NOPs4VWX5Zc stock and its assessment context; it should not be treated as a status finding for the Gulf or U.S. fishery.

NOAA says the U.S. Atlantic halibut stock is overfished according to its 2024 stock assessment and describes it as being at a very low level. It is managed under the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan and has a rebuilding plan with a target date of 2055. This U.S. status finding does not describe Canadian stocks.

DFO’s management plan for 4RST says that, on average over the previous five years, 96.2% of landings came from the directed longline fishery and 2.6% came as bycatch in the Greenland halibut gillnet fleet. In this Gulf fishery, directed halibut fishing is allowed for fixed-gear fleet sectors; mobile-gear allocations serve bycatch needs in other groundfish fisheries. These details are specific to 4RST, not a description of all Atlantic halibut fisheries.
