As of October 8, 2026, the U.S. Department of State estimates that expedited passport processing takes 2–3 weeks. That is the agency’s processing time—not the time from mailing your application until the passport reaches your door. Mailing can add up to two weeks before processing and up to two weeks after issuance, so the actual wait may be substantially longer.
What the 2–3-week estimate includes
The State Department’s expedited estimate measures processing time at a passport agency or center. It does not include the time for your application to travel to the Department or for your issued passport to be delivered to you.
The Department says mailing may take up to two weeks in each direction. Adding those potential mailing periods to the 2–3-week processing estimate gives a possible total of roughly 6–7 weeks from mailing to receipt. That is a planning calculation, not a separate State Department guarantee or estimate for every application. Optional faster return delivery is available for an additional fee, but it does not speed up government processing.

Which option fits your travel date?
Travel is six weeks or more away
The Department points applicants with at least six weeks before travel to routine service. Its current routine estimate is 4–6 weeks before mailing time, so leave room for delivery and for any request to correct or supplement your application.
Travel is less than six weeks away
Expedited service is generally the mail or acceptance-facility option for this timing. Eligible renewals may be expedited by mail; first-time adult applicants and people who do not qualify to renew generally apply in person. The 2–3-week estimate still excludes mailing.

Travel is less than 2–3 weeks away
Check whether you qualify for an urgent appointment at a passport agency or center. Appointments are required, and you need proof of international travel. The usual eligibility window is within 14 calendar days of travel; if you need a foreign visa, it is within 28 days. Appointment availability depends on location and timing, so an appointment or passport before departure cannot be assumed.
Fees and faster delivery
The State Department lists a $60 expedite fee on top of the ordinary application fees. Its adult application guidance also lists optional 1–3-day return delivery for $26.87. Fees can change, so confirm the amount on the current official fee page when applying.

Faster return delivery affects the delivery leg after issuance; it does not shorten the agency’s processing interval or eliminate the time needed to send an application to the Department.
What can prevent avoidable delays?
Submit the required form, supporting evidence, fees, and a compliant photo. For a paper application, the State Department requires one recent color photo measuring 2 × 2 inches, printed on matte or glossy photo-quality paper. You can use a photo service or take and print a photo at home. The photo is a requirement, not a way to accelerate processing.

- Use a photo that meets the Department’s size, quality, and print requirements.
- Respond promptly if the Department asks for additional information.
- Monitor your application through the official passport status service or email updates.
Can a passport courier make it faster?
No. The State Department says courier companies can help prepare an application, but they do not get a passport processed faster than applying directly. A courier charges its own fee and requires you to share sensitive documents; it is not a faster government processing lane.
What the 15-business-day refund policy means
The Department’s expedited-service fee refund policy says it processes applications within 15 business days for that policy. The clock starts when the application reaches a passport agency or when an expedite upgrade request is made—not when you mail the application. Any refund depends on the Department’s policy and review. This timing statement is not a promise that your passport will arrive by a particular travel date.
