Epic Games said it had 4,000 employees after its March 24, 2026 layoffs, according to the Associated Press. That is the latest specific total identified, not a verified live count for October 2026. Epic’s own announcement confirmed more than 1,000 layoffs but did not state the company’s resulting headcount.
Epic Games’ latest reported employee count
The latest specific figure is 4,000 employees after the March 2026 layoffs. The Associated Press reported that total on March 24, citing Epic. Epic’s announcement that day confirmed layoffs of over 1,000 people, but did not give a post-layoff total.
As of October 8, 2026, an exact current headcount has not been established by the cited reporting. Treat 4,000 as a dated, reported figure rather than a confirmed count for today.
Why Epic’s workforce changed
March 2026 layoffs
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said the company was spending significantly more than it was making because of a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025. Epic announced layoffs of over 1,000 employees and said it had identified more than $500 million in savings through contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles. The savings figure describes identified cost reductions, not a separate employee count.

September 2023 layoffs and divestitures
In September 2023, Epic said it was laying off around 830 employees, or 16% of jobs. It separately said around 250 people were leaving through the Bandcamp and SuperAwesome divestitures. Those departures were not part of the announced 830 layoffs, so the figures should not be combined as though they describe one layoff total. Epic’s explanation at the time cited creator-driven growth in Fortnite and a lower-margin business model than its earlier Battle Royale-driven expansion. See the company’s September 2023 statement.
What Epic Games does
Epic describes itself as an interactive entertainment company and provider of 3D engine technology. Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, it says it has dozens of offices worldwide. Its ecosystem includes Fortnite, Unreal Engine, Epic Games Store, and Epic Online Services. These products and offices provide context for the company’s scale, but they do not establish its employee count.

Why older figures cannot establish today’s headcount
Subtracting layoffs announced in 2023 and 2026 from an older workforce figure would not produce a reliable current total. Hiring, departures, and other workforce changes between those dates also affect headcount. The most defensible answer is therefore the date-specific total AP reported after the March 2026 cuts, with the qualification that a live October 2026 figure is unverified.
