The seller sets the amount when preparing the shipment; the recipient’s payment options and any limits depend on the shipment and location.
How UPS COD works
- The shipper sets up the collection. In UPS WorldShip, the shipper selects COD and enters the amount to collect. UPS says the COD information prints on the shipping label. UPS WorldShip COD help
- UPS transports the package. The COD information alerts the delivery driver that payment is due.
- The recipient pays according to the shipment terms. The driver collects the amount specified by the shipper, subject to the selected COD restrictions and service.
- UPS remits the collected money. UPS describes the arrangement as collecting payment from the receiver for remittance to the shipper or another designated party. Its WorldShip help puts it this way: “Your customer pays the UPS driver for the cost of the parcel, and UPS sends this payment to you.” UPS glossary
What payment can the recipient use?
There is no universal payment-method list for every UPS COD delivery. In the cited WorldShip instructions, if the shipper selects the cashier’s-cheque/money-order-only option, the driver accepts a cashier’s cheque, money order, official bank cheque, or similar instrument for the exact amount. If that restriction is not selected, the help page says the driver may also accept a business or personal cheque payable to the shipper. These instructions are specific to that WorldShip setup; check with the seller about the payment method for your shipment.
Can you pay UPS COD online?
Sometimes a payment must be made before delivery instead of to the driver. UPS says a “Pay Now” link appears on the package’s tracking page when COD or import charges need to be paid in advance. COD is not the same as import duties and taxes
A seller’s COD amount is the collection the shipper requests for the shipment; import duties, taxes, and other government charges arise from customs on an international shipment. They are different charges. On its US page, UPS says a $12 International COD fee may be charged to the US recipient when applicable duties, taxes, or other government charges are not paid before delivery. Availability, fees, limits, and remittance timing vary
COD terms depend on origin, destination, service, and shipment date. UPS WorldShip help confirms that an additional charge applies to each COD shipment, but does not establish a current domestic US fee amount. Shippers should consult the UPS rate and service guide that applies to their shipment.
For a specific example of regional variation, UPS’s 2025 Great Britain Service Guide describes COD for domestic deliveries and certain European destinations, with availability not offered to every postal code. That guide lists cash collection up to the local-currency equivalent of USD 5,000 per receiver per day, cheque collection up to the equivalent of USD 50,000 per receiver per day, and an Access Point cap equivalent to USD 1,000. It also lists a fee of 1% of the amount collected or at least GBP 24.35 per COD shipment, in addition to shipping costs, and says collected payments are normally remitted within a week. What sellers should know about receiving COD funds
Standard remittance timing depends on the applicable UPS terms. UPS Capital describes an optional COD Enhancement service for enrolled users that processes COD checks, provides online remittance statements, and generally deposits funds two to three days after delivery. The page carries a 2011 copyright notice, so sellers should verify that the service and timing remain available before relying on them. UPS Capital COD Enhancement
