Delta said it would defer any aircraft delivery that carried a tariff—not claim a special exemption. Later US-EU trade rules provided tariff relief for certain qualifying EU civil-aircraft products, subject to customs requirements. The distinction matters: Delta’s public comments describe a plan, while the customs rules apply generally and do not establish what Delta paid or saved on any particular plane.
What Delta said it would do
On Delta’s April 9, 2025, earnings call, CEO Ed Bastian was asked whether the airline might delay Airbus deliveries amid tariff uncertainty. He said Delta would work with Airbus and hoped trade discussions would resolve the issue. Asked directly about postponements, he answered: “We will defer any deliveries that have a tariff on it.” (Delta Q1 2025 earnings-call transcript)
That was a stated response to the risk of a tariff-bearing delivery. It is not evidence that Delta actually postponed a specific aircraft, or that the airline had secured a company-specific waiver.
How the later US-EU framework changed the picture
On July 28, 2025, Delta welcomed the US-EU trade agreement, saying it preserved a “zero-tariff environment” for aircraft and component parts. That was Delta’s characterization of the agreement. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) later issued implementation guidance describing how certain qualifying EU civil-aircraft products could receive tariff treatment under the framework. The guidance is not a blanket exemption for every aircraft or every charge. Eligibility depends on factors including EU origin, the goods’ tariff classification, whether they qualify as civil-aircraft products, and criteria in the Agreement on Trade in Civil Aircraft. It also describes procedures for correcting qualifying entries or seeking refunds. Importers must meet the applicable requirements; a plane’s Airbus branding alone does not establish eligibility.
What the July 2026 action means
A July 9, 2026, White House proclamation on commercial-aircraft imports continued negotiations with trading partners and recorded the Commerce Secretary’s recommendation that no immediate Section 232 tariffs be imposed on commercial aircraft, jet engines, and associated parts under that action. It did not rule out other measures later, depending on negotiations. (White House proclamation)

That is a separate policy development from Delta’s 2025 delivery statement and from the CBP rules for qualifying EU civil-aircraft goods. The proclamation did not announce a Delta-specific arrangement.

The public statements and government guidance establish Delta’s announced willingness to defer tariff-bearing deliveries and the existence of a conditional customs treatment for eligible goods. They do not identify a named Delta aircraft entry affected by the rules, establish that a particular delivery was postponed, or quantify any tariff cost Delta avoided.

Bastian also said on the April 2025 call that US aerospace exports to Europe were six times the amount Europe imported into the United States. That is his attributed statement, not an independently verified statistic in the sources cited here. Delta separately asserted that the trade agreement would help protect an annual US aerospace trade surplus of $104 billion; that figure is Delta’s claim, not an estimate of Delta’s own savings.
