Joe Pesci’s career took off after years of performing, a frustrating first attempt at Hollywood, and a chance to show his work to Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese. His roles ranged from crime dramas such as Goodfellas to broad comedies such as Home Alone and My Cousin Vinny. Celebrity Net Worth estimated his net worth at $50 million in a page updated June 9, 2026; that is a third-party estimate, not a figure Pesci has publicly confirmed.
How Joe Pesci became famous
Pesci was born in Newark, New Jersey, on February 9, 1943. His entertainment career began long before his best-known film roles: Biography.com reports that he performed on radio at age four, appeared regularly on the television program Star Time Kids by 1953, and later recorded music under the name Joe Ritchie, including the LP Little Joe Sure Can Sing.
After an early film setback, Pesci stepped away from acting. He later recalled in a 1994 Los Angeles Times interview that he had come to Hollywood in the early 1970s, grown frustrated, and returned east. He worked for a mason in Las Vegas, managed an Italian restaurant in the Bronx, and sang for diners. That detour was not a conventional path to a film career, but it preceded the role that brought him back to Hollywood.
What was Pesci’s big break?
Robert De Niro saw Pesci in the 1976 film The Death Collector and brought his performance to Martin Scorsese’s attention. De Niro and Scorsese invited Pesci to read for Raging Bull. In the 1994 interview, Pesci recalled: “Then I got a call from Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese asking me to read for ‘Raging Bull.’ They’d seen me in (the B-movie) ‘Death Collector’ and liked me.”

Scorsese cast Pesci as Joey LaMotta in Raging Bull (1980). The part established him as a compelling dramatic actor and began a sustained run of film work. He appeared in Easy Money, Once Upon a Time in America, and Lethal Weapon 2, among other films. His career was not a straight climb, though: Pesci later said he only understood that he wanted to be a working actor after he had quit and returned east.
Why Pesci’s career was more than mob roles
Pesci became closely associated with intense crime films, but his best-known work spans distinct kinds of performance. In Goodfellas (1990), he played Tommy DeVito, a volatile character in a crime drama. The role earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. That same year, he played burglar Harry in Home Alone, a family comedy that reached a very different audience.

My Cousin Vinny (1992) moved him into the comic lead: Pesci played an inexperienced lawyer defending two young men. He returned to crime drama in Scorsese’s Casino (1995), reuniting with De Niro. The contrast—supporting roles in dramas, a comic lead, and broad physical comedy—helps explain why his screen identity cannot be reduced to one type of character.
Pesci announced his retirement from acting in 1999, then returned selectively. One later role was in Scorsese’s The Irishman (2019). The Golden Globes’ official profile lists Pesci as a Best Supporting Actor nominee for Raging Bull in the 1981 awards cycle, GoodFellas in 1991, and The Irishman in 2020; those were nominations, distinct from his Oscar win for Goodfellas.

His 1994 comments also offer a more modest view of his ambitions than the phrase “Hollywood icon” might suggest. Speaking about his career, he said: “It wasn’t until I came back (East)–till I quit–that I realized I just wanted to be a working actor, and I wound up being successful.” In the same interview, he added: “I’m not into that Hollywood stuff.”

The same page lists selected film salaries as reported figures, including approximately $1 million each for Goodfellas and Home Alone, $3.5 million for Jimmy Hollywood (1994), and approximately $3 million for Casino (1995). These amounts are claims published by Celebrity Net Worth; the page does not provide a contract citation for each line item. They are not a complete record of Pesci’s career income.
Those reported salaries cannot be added together to establish a fortune. A net-worth estimate would need to account for more than selected movie pay, including taxes, expenses, investments, other assets, and liabilities. The available figures do not establish those details, so the $50 million figure is best read as Celebrity Net Worth’s estimate—not as Pesci’s verified total earnings or a confirmed balance sheet.
