The ship, the Hercules, reportedly sank near the Cape of Good Hope while carrying Bengali saltpetre. Scroll characterizes Voltaire’s loss as 90%, but does not provide the calculation or a final recovery amount—so that percentage should be treated as the article’s reported figure, not a verifiable account statement.
How did Voltaire lose money trading with India?
The reported loss arose from a single private maritime venture, not from Voltaire buying shares in the French East India Company. Scroll.in says Voltaire put 40,000 livres into a venture run by the Bérard brothers. Its ship, the Hercules, was carrying saltpetre from Bengal when it sank somewhere near the Cape of Good Hope. The cargo’s loss would have jeopardized the venture’s proceeds and Voltaire’s investment.

The available account does not establish how much, if anything, was ultimately recovered, nor does it show how the reported 90% loss was calculated. It is therefore not possible to derive a precise loss amount from the reported investment alone.
What does the reported 90% loss establish?
It establishes how Scroll.in describes the outcome, not a fully documented accounting. A 90% loss on 40,000 livres would imply that 4,000 livres remained recoverable, but that is only the arithmetic implied by the percentage; Scroll does not supply evidence that this was the actual recovery. The final amount should not be presented as known.
#1 Best Overall
The distinction matters because a shipwreck, the value of cargo, insurance or other claims, and investors’ eventual distributions can produce different figures for the venture’s loss and an individual investor’s net loss. The account supplied by Scroll does not detail those elements.
Voltaire had invested in India-related trade before the shipwreck
The Bérard venture was not his first reported exposure to commerce with India. Scroll.in says a revenue table kept by Voltaire’s secretary Sébastien Longchamp records 52,532 livres in returns from his investments between 1749 and 1754. That is a historical figure reported by Scroll in 2020; the York University dissertation discussed below does not independently verify it.
Rank #2
The earlier returns and the later shipwreck describe different outcomes at different points in Voltaire’s commercial involvement. The reported 52,532 livres in returns do not establish the net result of all his India-related investments over his lifetime, and they do not explain the loss calculation for the Hercules venture.
The private voyage was not the French East India Company
France’s trade with India was broader than either Voltaire’s investment or one company’s fortunes. Sanjukta Banerjee’s York University dissertation describes French imports that included textiles, spices, incense, coffee, tea, indigo, and diamonds. It also places the trade in a setting marked by recurring deficits and military and political competition.

Its privileges in India were suspended in 1769, a commercial and political decision. That institutional development should not be conflated with the Bérard brothers’ private merchant voyage aboard the Hercules: the available sources identify Voltaire’s investment with the private venture, not as a company shareholding.

Voltaire’s phrase refers to his criticism of France’s costly trade with India, not simply to the Hercules shipwreck. The York University dissertation connects the French phrase “grand et ruineux commerce de l’Inde” to his Précis du siècle de Louis XV, dated 1763.
Rank #4
Scroll.in’s English rendering of a passage it attributes to Voltaire’s Précis du siècle de Louis XV reads: “The French, in this part of the world are left with nothing but the regret of having spent, for over 40 years, enormous sums in order maintain a Company which has never made the slightest profit, which never paid anything from the profits of its trade to its stakeholders and creditors…a memorable and probably useless example of the little intelligence that the French nation has had until now in the grand and ruinous trade with India”.
This is Scroll.in’s English rendering, rather than a quotation presented here as a checked translation against a specific edition. The dissertation’s link between the French wording and the 1763 work supplies the historical context for the phrase.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Reported investment: Voltaire put 40,000 livres into a private Bérard brothers venture, according to Scroll.in.
- Reported disaster: The Hercules, carrying Bengali saltpetre, sank near the Cape of Good Hope, according to the same account.
- Reported loss rate: Scroll.in calls the loss 90%, but the underlying arithmetic and final recovery are not given.
- Broader context: Voltaire’s reported earlier returns and France’s wider, commercially and politically unsettled India trade show why one private voyage should not stand in for the whole history.
