Re:

How Does Online Shopping Impact the Environment?

Online shopping can reduce impacts when efficient delivery replaces a dedicated car trip, but there is no universal winner. Travel, delivery, packaging, returns, and product life cycle all matter.

Online shopping is not automatically better or worse for the environment than shopping in a store. Its impact depends on what the order replaces, how efficiently it is delivered, whether it is returned, and what the product requires over its full life cycle. Replacing a dedicated car trip with a consolidated delivery may reduce emissions; replacing a walk or a store visit combined with other errands may not.

Why the shopping channel alone does not decide the impact

A fair comparison holds the product constant and compares the activities needed to get it. Online shopping can avoid a customer’s drive to a store, but it adds parcel transport and often shipping packaging. In-store shopping avoids home delivery, but a dedicated car trip can have a substantial footprint of its own.

A 2023 systematic review in Environmental Science & Technology examined more than 20 studies and 244 purchase estimates. It found that online purchases generally had lower carbon footprints in car-dependent contexts. The authors also highlighted inconsistent assumptions across studies and potential blind spots around changes in consumer behavior and the broader pattern of consumption. That result is not a universal verdict for every product, place, or shopper.

The baseline matters: a delivery replacing a special car journey is different from one replacing a trip made on foot, by bike, or by transit. It is also different from a store visit already combined with another errand.

Which parts of an online order matter most?

Factor What to consider Why it can change the comparison
Customer travel Would you drive specifically to the store, or walk, cycle, use transit, or combine the visit with another trip? Avoiding a dedicated car trip can favor delivery; replacing a low-emission trip may not.
Delivery network Are parcels consolidated on a route, and is delivery likely to succeed on the first attempt? Fragmented routes and failed attempts can add vehicle kilometres. Consolidation and efficient routing can reduce them.
Speed Does an expedited option require air transport or a separate delivery trip? Fast shipping can use more energy and raise emissions, particularly when it involves air transport.
Packaging How much shipping material is added, and what happens to it after delivery? Packaging has impacts from material production, transport, and disposal or recovery; there is no established universal packaging winner.
Returns Is a return likely, and will it need additional transport, handling, or packaging? Reverse logistics can add activity beyond the original delivery.
Product life cycle Is the item needed, durable, repairable, reusable, and managed appropriately at end of life? Manufacturing and use can outweigh the difference between delivery and store travel.

This is a broader environmental question than carbon alone. A carbon-footprint comparison does not settle packaging waste, air pollution, water use, toxicity, or ecosystem impacts.

When can home delivery reduce emissions?

Delivery can compare favorably when it replaces individual car journeys and parcels are carried on efficient, consolidated routes. Flexible delivery timing may give a carrier more opportunity to combine stops, while reliable first-time delivery avoids extra travel. The outcome depends on the actual route, vehicle, and local delivery system.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2015 grocery examples illustrate how route assumptions change the result; they are scenarios, not current national averages. In one example, a delivery route serves 30 households using a 14-mpg truck and flexible timing. EPA says this could halve greenhouse gases relative to its specified individual car-trip baseline. A contrasting example serves 10 households with a 10-mpg truck and narrower delivery windows and could emit more than that baseline.

These examples show why “delivered to your door” is not enough information to determine the impact. A delivery that adds a vehicle journey or is poorly consolidated can lose the advantage of avoiding customer travel.

How do speed, packaging, and returns affect the result?

Expedited delivery

Fast options can raise impacts if they require air transport or a separate trip rather than fitting into an established route. UNCTAD’s Digital Economy Report 2024 discusses delivery speed and failed attempts as factors in e-commerce’s environmental effects. Choosing a slower option can help only when it changes the delivery operation; the label “standard” by itself does not establish how a parcel will travel.

Shipping packaging

Online orders may require transport packaging such as boxes, mailers, and cushioning. That material has impacts in its production and at the end of its use. Historical packaging inventories describe different formats but do not establish a current, universal best choice.

  • FOOD-CONTACT COMPLIANT: Made from certified compostable materials for food-contact applications. BPA- and BPS-free. Store in a cool, dry place away from heat, humidity, and direct sunlight.

Reusable packaging is not automatically lower-impact: it must be reused enough times, and the return system must not require excessive transport. In two Canadian apparel cases reported by Park and colleagues in the Journal of Industrial Ecology in 2024, a returnable mailer had greater impact than an expendable mailer in 9 of 10 assessed categories, even at 40 reuses; transportation distance was a primary reason. In a separate apparel-rental case, a returnable box had lower impact than an expendable corrugated box in 6 of 10 categories. These case studies show that the logistics and reuse system matter, not that one packaging format always wins.

Returns

A return can mean additional transport, sorting or handling, and repacking. Its effect depends on the route and process, so there is no single emissions figure that applies to all returns. Checking fit, dimensions, and specifications before ordering can help avoid preventable reverse-logistics activity.

Why the product’s full life cycle still matters

The delivery is only one stage in a product’s environmental impact. The EPA’s life-cycle framing includes sourcing, manufacturing, packaging, transport, use, repair, reuse, and end-of-life management. Buying something unnecessary, short-lived, or frequently replaced can outweigh improvements in delivery.

Grocery orders can involve another trade-off: a 2017 model by Belavina, Girotra, and Kabra, indexed in EPA HERO, found that grocery subscription models could reduce emissions from food waste while increasing delivery emissions. The balance varied with geography and routing economies. This is a modeled result, not a guarantee that subscriptions reduce impacts in every location.

What can shoppers do to reduce avoidable impacts?

  • Pause before buying. The EPA recommends considering whether an item is needed, already owned, or could be borrowed, rented, or shared. Maintaining and repairing what you have can avoid replacement purchases.
  • Combine orders when it makes sense. Bundling purchases and allowing flexible delivery timing may support route consolidation, though the benefit depends on the carrier and local system.
  • Reduce failed deliveries. Use delivery arrangements that make a successful first attempt more likely, where available, to avoid extra vehicle travel.
  • Skip unnecessary express shipping. When speed could require air transport or a separate trip, a less urgent option may avoid that added activity.
  • Prevent avoidable returns. Check dimensions, fit, specifications, and the seller’s return policy before placing an order.
  • Evaluate reuse claims as a system. For reusable packaging, the relevant questions include how many uses are actually achieved and how far it travels between uses.
  • Look for substantiated product claims. EPA guidance favors credible ecolabels and cautions against vague claims such as “green” or “environmentally friendly” without clear support. A label’s criteria and scope matter; it does not by itself prove low impact across every life-cycle stage.

How to make a practical online-versus-store comparison

  1. Hold the product constant. Compare the same item, rather than treating different products as equivalent because they are bought through different channels.
  2. Identify the trip being replaced. Ask whether you would otherwise make a dedicated car trip, walk or take transit, or combine a store visit with another errand.
  3. Consider the delivery conditions. Note whether the order is urgent, likely to be consolidated, and likely to arrive successfully on the first attempt.
  4. Account for packaging and return likelihood. Consider additional material and the possibility of reverse transport and handling without assuming a single package format is always preferable.
  5. Include the product’s useful life. Consider whether the item is needed, likely to last, and suitable for repair or reuse.

No general-purpose current statistic establishes the average emissions per parcel, the share of online-shopping emissions attributable to packaging, or a universal online-versus-store footprint. Any numerical comparison needs a defined product, geography, year, travel baseline, and delivery assumptions.
