U.S. farm equipment sales are down in the latest reported comparison, alongside a USDA forecast for weaker inflation-adjusted farm income and higher real production expenses in 2026. Through August, AEM-reported preliminary retail sales of tractors were down 12.4% year over year, and self-propelled combine sales were down 9.1%. The figures point to a softer market, but they do not establish that farm finances alone caused the decline.
Are farmers buying fewer tractors and combines?
Yes, in the latest U.S. comparison available here. The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) released its August 2026 report on September 10, reporting preliminary monthly retail sales supplied by member companies. Its year-to-date figures through August were lower than the same period in 2025:
| Equipment category | August 2026 vs. August 2025 | Year to date through August 2026 vs. 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Total farm tractors | 14,571 vs. 15,843; down 8.0% | 119,889 vs. 136,883; down 12.4% |
| Self-propelled combines | 387 vs. 403; down 4.0% | 2,063 vs. 2,269; down 9.1% |
These are AEM-reported preliminary retail sales, not a count of all equipment transactions, shipments, production, or dealer inventory. The report is U.S.-specific, and the figures should not be read as including Canada. Because AEM publishes monthly reports, later releases may supersede this August comparison. AEM’s August 2026 report describes its member-company statistical reporting programs and the preliminary nature of the data.
What does the 2026 farm-income outlook show?
USDA’s Economic Research Service (ERS) forecast, updated September 3, 2026, points to lower farm income after inflation. Its measures differ, so “farm income” is not a single number:
#1 Best Overall
- Value Farm Toys: This 1:64 scale farm playset comes with a total of 70 pieces that kids and collectors will love, including tractors, trucks, farm tools, farm animal toys, and more
- Durable Construction: Toys in this collection are made from high quality die-cast metal or durable plastic to keep playtime going day after day

- Kids Toys: This farm toy set is an Officially Licensed John Deere product for John Deere toy enthusiasts ages 5 years and up
| Measure | 2026 forecast and comparison with 2025 | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Net farm income | $158.4 billion; down $4.3 billion (2.6%) nominally and $9.1 billion (5.5%) after inflation | A broad measure that includes noncash items as well as cash income and expenses |
| Net cash farm income | $176.4 billion; up 0.4% nominally but down 2.5% after inflation | Cash receipts and farm-related income, including federal payments, minus cash expenses; it omits noncash items counted in net farm income |
Both forecasts remain above their respective 2006–25 averages after inflation, according to ERS. That context matters: the forecast is for a decline, not proof that every farm is unprofitable or unable to buy equipment. ERS notes that new data can revise past estimates; its September update incorporated newly available National Agricultural Statistics Service data and preliminary 2025 Agricultural Resource Management Survey data. See the ERS farm income forecast for its definitions and updates.
Why are farm receipts and costs pulling in different directions?
USDA forecasts 2026 cash receipts of $540.3 billion, down 0.3% nominally from 2025. That small overall change masks divergent commodity-group forecasts: crop receipts are projected at $253.0 billion, up 6.1% nominally, while animal and animal-product receipts are projected at $287.3 billion, down 5.4%. These are forecasts, not final year-end results.

At the same time, total production expenses are forecast at $492.8 billion, up $21.2 billion (4.5%) nominally and $7.1 billion (1.5%) after inflation. ERS attributes much of the nominal increase to livestock and poultry purchases, fertilizer, lime and soil conditioners, and fuel and oils. This broad expense figure is not a measure of machinery costs alone. The detailed estimates are in ERS’s farm sector income forecast.
Government payments are part of the forecast
Direct government farm program payments are forecast at $47.4 billion in 2026, up $19.5 billion (69.8%) from 2025. The forecast includes several kinds of direct payments and excludes crop-insurance indemnities. Payments contribute to the farm-income picture, but they are not revenue earned from commodity sales, and the aggregate figure does not mean every farm receives the same amount.

How could farm finances affect equipment purchases?
When inflation-adjusted income weakens while real expenses rise, some operators may have less cash available for a machinery purchase or replacement. The lower AEM sales counts are consistent with softer retail activity in tractor and combine categories. Together, the figures support a cautious conclusion: current farm-economy pressure may be part of the backdrop to weaker equipment demand.
They do not show how much of the sales decline the farm economy caused. The USDA forecasts describe sector finances, while AEM reports preliminary member-company retail sales; neither measures individual buying decisions or isolates the effect of farm income on equipment sales. AEM Senior Vice President Curt Blades described July as showing “continued softness in the agricultural equipment market as farmers and equipment manufacturers navigate persistent economic uncertainty.” That was his interpretation of July data in AEM’s July release, not a statistical explanation for the August sales changes.

Why the national trend does not describe every farm
Farm finances vary by business type and location. ERS expects average net cash farm income for farm businesses to rise nominally in six of its nine farm resource regions in 2026. Its outlook is generally stronger for crop-specialized businesses than for animal and product specializations, with specialty-crop businesses an exception among crop specializations. These are broad forecasts; they do not determine any individual operator’s available cash or equipment needs.
The sector balance sheet also offers context, but not a shortcut to a farm’s purchasing capacity. USDA forecasts farm-sector debt at $605.1 billion in 2026, up 4.6% nominally, and the debt-to-asset ratio rising from 13.34% in 2025 to 13.54% in 2026. Working capital is forecast to rise 3.5% nominally in 2026 after falling 15.0% in 2025. Real equity is expected to edge down even as nominal equity rises. Since aggregate asset and equity totals are heavily affected by real-estate values, they do not establish how much cash a particular farm can spend on machinery.

What is behind the drop in farm equipment sales?
The available figures establish that tractor and combine retail sales were lower through August 2026 and that USDA expects real farm income to weaken as real production expenses rise. They make financial pressure a plausible part of the explanation, not a proven single cause. The cited figures do not quantify the effects of interest rates, equipment prices, tariffs, dealer inventories, trade policy, or replacement timing. Those factors should not be presented as explanations for this decline without direct evidence.
