Robbie Fowler was described as “the richest sportsman living in Britain” in a 2005 Guardian interview, which estimated his fortune at £28 million and reported that he owned close to 100 properties. That was a contemporary estimate, not an audited balance sheet or a current ranking. A later figure of £38 million, reported in 2025, is also an attributed estimate—not verified net worth.
Where the “richest sportsman” description came from
The phrase traces to Sarah Edworthy’s interview with Fowler for The Guardian, published in September 2005. The article’s standfirst called him “the richest sportsman living in Britain.” It did not set out a ranking methodology or present audited financial records, so the wording is best understood as the publication’s characterization at the time—not proof that Fowler held a formally verified national title.

The Guardian estimated Fowler’s fortune at £28 million and said it had been accumulated through football and ownership of close to 100 properties. Both figures describe what the interview reported in 2005. They do not establish his wealth or property holdings today.
How football and property featured in the account
Football earnings and a property portfolio
The 2005 profile linked Fowler’s wealth to his football career and property holdings. It did not break down how much came from playing wages, property purchases or appreciation, rental income, or other investments. The reporting therefore supports a combination of football and property as context, but not the claim that property alone made him wealthy.

Advice that let him focus on football
Fowler told Edworthy: “I’ve got a financial advisor who deals with it so I can concentrate on football.” The quote describes his use of an adviser; it does not disclose a particular investment strategy or show how the adviser’s work affected his wealth. A 2025 SportBible account also says manager Graeme Souness persuaded Fowler as a young player to enlist an adviser, but that detail and its account of how his fortune grew should be treated as claims made by that later article.
Horse racing and Steve McManaman
The Guardian profile also reported Fowler’s interest in horse racing and a partnership with close friend Steve McManaman. It did not quantify the value of those activities or explain how much, if anything, they contributed to his fortune.

How to interpret the later £38 million estimate
In an article dated 28 April 2025, SportBible attributed a £38 million fortune estimate to Celebrity Net Worth. That is a third-party online estimate cited by SportBible, not an audited statement or an independently established valuation. The article does not provide a current property schedule or explain a valuation method that would make the figure directly comparable with The Guardian’s 2005 estimate.
| Claim | What the source says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| £28 million | The Guardian’s estimate of Fowler’s fortune in its September 2005 interview; the same report connected it to football and close to 100 properties. | A dated media estimate, not an audited balance sheet or a present-day figure. |
| Close to 100 properties | The Guardian’s description of Fowler’s holdings in 2005. | A historical reported count; it does not establish his current portfolio. |
| £38 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate attributed by SportBible in its 28 April 2025 article. | A later third-party estimate, with no audited valuation or shared methodology demonstrated against the 2005 figure. |
The £28 million and £38 million numbers are estimates from different dates and sources. Without a shared method or verified financial disclosures, the difference between them cannot be treated as a measured increase in Fowler’s wealth.

What is—and is not—established about his wealth today
The available reporting explains why Fowler acquired a reputation for exceptional wealth: a successful football career, a substantial property portfolio reported in 2005, and the use of a financial adviser. It does not establish his present-day net worth, current property count, or the value of individual investments. Accordingly, “Britain’s richest sportsman” belongs to the 2005 coverage, not to a verified current ranking.
