Prosecutors charged 31 people in October 2025, including alleged organizers, technology suppliers, cheating-team members and former professional athletes recruited as “Face Cards.” These remain allegations unless established in court; the Justice Department says defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
What does the poker indictment say happened?
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced on October 23, 2025, that an indictment charged 31 people with participating in schemes to rig illegal poker games beginning as early as 2019. The alleged games included locations in New York City and East Hampton, as well as games elsewhere in the United States. The indictment, filed October 9, describes a network prosecutors say included game organizers, suppliers of cheating technology, former professional athletes recruited as “Face Cards,” cheating teams, money launderers, and members or associates of organized crime families.
Prosecutors say members and associates of the Bonanno, Gambino and Genovese crime families backed two New York games and received portions of the proceeds. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said victims could lose tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time. HSI New York Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel characterized the alleged losses as “at least $7 million” and said the operation also included violent robberies. That figure is an official’s description of alleged losses, not a final court finding. The Justice Department’s announcement and the indictment in United States v. Aiello et al. describe the charges.
How did hacked card shufflers allegedly work?
According to the indictment as summarized by prosecutors, altered shuffling machines allegedly read every card in a deck, enabling the system to determine which player would have the winning hand. The information was allegedly transmitted to an off-site operator, who relayed it by cellphone to a player at the table known as the “Quarterback” or “Driver.” That player then allegedly signaled teammates through prearranged actions involving chips or other objects. The alleged advantage therefore depended on a chain of information and coordination—not simply on a machine secretly choosing a winner.

- Relay the information: The system allegedly sent card information to an off-site operator.
- Signal the table: The operator allegedly informed a designated player, who conveyed useful information to teammates using agreed signals.
- Exploit the information: Teammates could allegedly use what they knew to guide their betting against victims.
The indictment also alleges use of other methods, including a chip tray analyzer, an X-ray table capable of reading face-down cards, and special contact lenses or glasses for reading marked cards. Those are separate allegations in the charging documents, not proof that every game or defendant used every method.
Were the machines hacked through USB?
Not necessarily—and the distinction matters. WIRED’s October 23, 2025, reporting says the indictment described alleged participants using pre-rigged Deckmate 2 shufflers under their control. That is different from exploiting a USB port on a machine owned or operated by someone else. WIRED had previously reported on USB-based security vulnerabilities, but its coverage distinguishes that technical pathway from the pre-rigged machines alleged in this case.

WIRED reported that Light & Wonder said it had updated firmware to patch vulnerabilities and disabled USB ports in all shufflers. That company-reported change does not establish that every machine in circulation has been updated or is secure: WIRED cautioned that secondhand or black-market machines may not have received the same attention, or could have been deliberately rigged. WIRED’s case reporting covers the alleged shufflers and the distinction from its separate security reporting.
Did NBA players use a hacked shuffler?
The indictment’s “Face Card” description refers to former professional athletes allegedly recruited to attract people to games. It does not mean that every athlete named in the case allegedly operated a shuffler, knew how the technology worked, or used a particular cheating device. The charging documents describe a broader alleged scheme with different roles; claims about a person’s conduct should be tied to that person’s specific charge or later court record.

A later official update provides a specific development concerning former NBA player Damon Jones. On April 28, 2026, the Justice Department reported that Jones pleaded guilty and admitted acting as a “Face Card” to entice victims to rigged games and being a member of cheating teams that defrauded victims at poker tables. His plea establishes his admitted role; it does not establish the guilt or disposition of every other defendant. The Justice Department’s plea announcement details that admission.
What the allegations mean for private poker games
The case is a reminder that a private game can involve risks beyond ordinary losses at the table when participants control the equipment, information or rules. Poker player and card-house owner Doug Polk, quoted by WIRED, warned: “If you’re showing up in a private game and there’s a shuffler, I would say you should run for the hills.” That is an expert’s caution, not a finding that all private games or shufflers are compromised.

- Be cautious when the host controls the game’s equipment and offers no meaningful transparency about it.
- Do not treat the presence of a commercial shuffler—or a company’s reported security update—as proof that a specific secondhand machine has been inspected or is safe.
- Leave a game if you cannot establish who is running it, how the equipment is managed, or whether the terms and handling of money are trustworthy.
These practical cautions are not claims that a particular device can be identified as compromised by appearance alone. The allegations describe hidden technology and coordinated participants; a player should not assume that a machine is safe simply because it looks ordinary.

The October 2025 announcement was a charging document, not a verdict on all 31 defendants. The Justice Department’s April 28, 2026 update reports Damon Jones’s guilty plea and admitted conduct. The two records answer different questions: the indictment sets out prosecutors’ allegations about a wider scheme, while Jones’s plea documents his own admission.
