There is no universal number of hours or days before a credit card payment appears in every issuer’s app. In the United States, a conforming payment generally must be credited as of the date the issuer receives it, but federal rules do not require it to appear in the account display on a particular date. The payment route, cutoff time, and issuer’s terms matter.
“Credited” and “posted” can mean different things
For timing purposes, separate the payment’s receipt or crediting date from the date it appears in your online account. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) says a creditor must credit a conforming payment as of its receipt date, but is not required to post it to the consumer account display on a particular date. That rule therefore does not promise when an app’s balance or transaction list will refresh. Regulation Z, 12 CFR § 1026.10
How the payment method affects the date
Payment through the card issuer’s website
Under the CFPB’s interpretation of Regulation Z, a website payment is generally received on the date you authorize it, including when you schedule an instruction in advance. For an instruction to make an immediate payment, if you submit it after the cutoff specified by the issuer, the receipt date may be treated as the next business day. Check the cutoff and applicable time zone in your issuer’s payment terms. CFPB, Regulation Z commentary on payment receipt
Phone, mail, and third-party bill pay
A payment sent through a third-party bill-pay service may not be received by the card issuer when you submit the instruction to that service. The CFPB interpretation describes receipt as occurring when the creditor gets the check or other transfer medium, provided the payment meets the creditor’s requirements. Phone and mailed payments also have method-specific requirements and cutoffs, so check the issuer’s terms rather than assuming the submission date is the receipt date. Will a payment made on the due date be on time?
For U.S. credit cards, CFPB guidance says companies generally cannot treat a payment as late if it is received by 5 p.m. on the due date in the time zone stated on the billing statement. An issuer may set a reasonable cutoff for online payments, so verify the account’s instructions and leave time for any third-party transfer. As the CFPB puts it: “For payments to be considered on time, they need to be received by that due date, rather than mailed on that date.” CFPB, “When is my credit card payment considered late?” (last reviewed December 9, 2024)
Sunday and holiday due dates have a specific rule for mailed payments: when the due date is Sunday or a holiday on which the issuer does not accept mailed payments, a mailed payment received by 5 p.m. on the next business day must be treated as on time. CFPB guidance distinguishes electronic and phone payments, which must be made by the due date. Do not assume that this mailed-payment exception applies to every payment method. What to do if the payment is not showing
- Check the confirmation. Review the payment confirmation for the amount, submission or authorization date, scheduled date, and any stated processing cutoff.
- Identify the route. A payment authorized on the issuer’s site, a phone payment, a mailed check, and a third-party bill payment can have different receipt dates.
- Check the issuer’s terms. Look for the cutoff, time zone, processing rules, and requirements for the payment method you used. Issuer agreements can set specific requirements; one issuer’s agreement does not establish a rule for other cards. CFPB credit card agreement database
- Contact the issuer if the account remains unclear. Use the confirmation details to ask whether the payment was received and credited, and when the transaction display is expected to update. The federal crediting rule does not establish a universal display-update interval.
What determines the answer for your account
- Where you initiated the payment: the issuer’s site or phone system, mail, or a third-party bill payer.
- Whether you requested an immediate or scheduled payment.
- The issuer’s cutoff and the time zone that applies.
- The distinction between the receipt or crediting date and the date the app or account display refreshes.
