Check your available balance, then swipe the physical card at checkout and choose Credit. You can also choose Debit and enter a four-digit PIN; Vanilla says its cards have no preassigned PIN, and you can designate one the first time you use the card. The available balance needs to cover the full charge, including tax, and some transactions may require extra funds for an authorization hold.

How to pay with your Vanilla Visa gift card

  1. Check the available balance. Use the Vanilla Gift FAQ balance-check option or call the number on the back of the card. For an online balance check, Vanilla asks for the card number, valid-through date and security code.
  2. Estimate the amount the card may need to cover. Include sales tax, and allow for a possible authorization hold. Vanilla says some transaction types can require a hold of up to 20% above the purchase amount; that is not a universal extra charge.
  3. Present the physical card at the terminal. Swipe it, then choose Credit. If you choose Debit, enter a four-digit PIN. Vanilla says you can designate the PIN on your first use at the keypad.
  4. Arrange split payment before swiping if the balance is short. Tell the cashier how much to charge to the gift card and how you will pay the remainder. The store may need to enter the partial amount before you present the card.

What to do if the card is declined

First recheck the available balance and compare it with the full total, including tax. A transaction may also need more available funds than its purchase amount because of an authorization hold. For example, restaurants may authorize an estimated tip before the final bill is settled.

A decline does not have one established universal cause. If the available balance appears sufficient and the transaction still fails, contact the issuer using the toll-free number printed on the card; Visa’s consumer gift-card guidance recommends contacting the card issuer when a card is declined.

Split payment depends on the store

A merchant may allow you to put part of the purchase on the gift card and pay the remainder another way, but the procedure varies. Ask whether the store accepts a partial card payment, whether the balance must be paid in cash, and whether the cashier needs to enter the requested amount before you swipe. The Vanilla Visa cardholder agreement does not establish the split-payment procedure for any specific retailer.

Where the card can be used—and its limits

Vanilla says physical cards can be used at merchants in the United States and District of Columbia that accept Visa debit. They cannot be used for recurring billing or at ATMs. If the printed valid-through date has passed, Vanilla says the gift-card funds do not expire, but directs cardholders to contact customer care about using the card; see its help page.
