You can’t cash out a Steam Wallet balance through Steam. Once a code is redeemed, its value can’t be withdrawn or transferred to another Steam account. If you haven’t redeemed a retail card, ask the store where you bought it whether it can be refunded; if you bought Wallet funds directly from Steam, a refund may be possible within 14 days if none of the funds have been used.
First, check what kind of Steam card you have
A Steam Wallet gift card or code adds value to your Steam Wallet. That balance can pay for eligible Steam purchases, including games, software, in-game items, and hardware, but it is not a general-purpose cash card. The key question is whether the code has been redeemed and how the funds were purchased.

What you can do depends on the card’s status

If the retail code is still unused
Keep the card and receipt, then contact the retailer that sold it. Steam says an activated card that has not been redeemed may be eligible for a refund, but the retailer must check it; a refund is not guaranteed. Steam’s guidance does not promise that every store will accept a return.
If you bought Wallet funds directly from Steam
Steam’s limited refund option applies to Wallet funds bought on Steam: request the refund within 14 days of purchase, and only if none of the funds have been used. This is not a general way to cash out redeemed retail cards or partially spent Wallet balances. Start through Steam Support’s Steam Wallet guidance.

If the code was redeemed or the balance was spent
Steam says Wallet funds cannot be withdrawn, gifted, or transferred to another account. Steam’s trading system is not a workaround: it does not support transfers of money, Wallet credits, PayPal funds, or gift cards. The official guidance offers no alternative cash-out method for a redeemed balance. See Steam’s recommended trading practices.
If you regret a game bought with Wallet funds
A game purchase is separate from a gift-card cash-out. Under Steam’s standard game refund guidance, a request generally needs to be made within 14 days of purchase and before you have played for two hours. Steam’s purchase help flow lets you request a refund to the Steam Wallet or the original payment method. Check the purchase and submit a request through Steam’s refund instructions; eligibility is determined under that policy.

Don’t give the card code to someone promising cash
Steam warns that requests to pay someone with a Steam Wallet card are likely scams. Scammers may pretend to represent an agency or demand gift cards for taxes, bail, debts, or prize delivery. Steam states that the cards can only be redeemed on Steam and advises: “Never give out a Steam Wallet Gift Card to a person you do not know.” Read Steam’s gift-card scam guidance.
If you have already shared a code, keep the card and receipt, report the incident to local police, and consider reporting it to the FTC if you are in the United States. If the card was activated but not redeemed, contact the retailer to ask whether it can check refund eligibility.
